The only time I have problems with shifting is when I am starting to get tired, and by that time I look for a place to pull over for the night!

you probably wont get on a hazmat tanker without a couple years experience, but food grade shouldnt be a problem, you might check with
hiway transport, I think they have a training program
Thanks

There are a couple..... But it would help to know where you live.

Do you want to pull chemical or food grade?

This is a pic of the fine cargo we haul. This is about 70,000Gals of the good stuff. The air is on in the tank that's why you see the bubbles. Any one want a bubble bath??? The air stirs it up cuz the heavy sludge sits at the bottom of the tank.

What company do you drive for ? Do you get good miles every week ? What about hometime ?

I just started driving a tanker 3 weeks ago with Florida Rock and Tank Lines out of their Wilmington NC terminal. I was a little worried about the surge in an unbaffled tank but it really doesn't bother me. You definitely know it's back there, but you just have to be more careful....don't try and stop quickly and don't go tearing around corners.

You will learn how to shift more smoothly but you can't stop the slosh altogether.

So far, the job isn't too bad. We haul chemicals, alot of methanol and caustic.

If anyone's thinking of driving a tanker, give it a try. you might find you like it.

Everyone be safe.

Yep, what he said!!

And the ONLY "HOT load" you will pull will have a placard on it that says "HOT" because its "elevated temperature materials"....and it is hot when its loaded and has to be hot when delivered!!

I am more than willing to learn different aspects of the job. I think my thing is that I want to get as much experience as I can under my belt. If I didn't love the job, I would not have decided to get back into trucking

I figure if I take it one step at a time, then it will help make transitioning into different jobs easier!

As far as my back goes... Well, it is so-so.

BTW, I prefer manuals, although I am not too sure what to think of driving automatics (USX). It is easier to manipulate, in my opinion, a manual to get you to do what you want then it is an automatic. However, an automatic shouldn't require more concentration!

Oh yeah, I am sure that I will. It will be a different experience, but I am sure just as much fun as pulling a van!

I seriously doubt if you will ever want to pull a van again.
