GPS on the Dash
#1
I have noticed more drivers who seem to have a GPS on their dash while driving. They seem to be almost as large as my laptop. It looks to me as though they would be very distracting to have on the dash while driving. I think it would block your vision in seeing in your right fender mirror and whether there was a car next to your hood. I wonder if anyone has had any experience with them?

Got no experience with them. I just read the map, have the route and destination in my head...somewhere :?
I agree it would/is likely to be distracting when your attention should be elsewhere.

I talked to a driver with a new frieghtliner century who had his up there. He said he just dropped the screen before right turns and was happy with the set up. A dollar's worth of velcro is tempting, but a true mount would probably be wiser.

Blocking my vision is the main reason I bought the touchscreen monitor and mounted it to my visor. That way my dash is still clear, but I can easily see the monitor without doing more than lifting my eyes.
The same for dash-mounted cb's and satelite radio's. On top of the dash blocks too much of an area I want to be able to see.

My Garmin has a suction cup that i mount to the windshield. It only takes up 4X3 inches. It is in a location that does not prohibit me from seeing. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, and it doesn't distract me from my driving duties.

The GPS I had was a windsheild mount and measured about 4"x6" or so.. I had it mounted next to the windsheild pillar on the drivers side, never affected my vision and was easy to reach in that location.
For OTR driving it was a lifesaver, would give me an accurate time frame on how long to complete my trip and a few choices for routing, and if I ever did miss a turn it help me get back where I needed to go.. Never seen any as big as a laptop though :?
