Default CB Radio advice

Ok - I'll probably end up starting a war here (which I did a couple times on the cb this week), but I'd like some advice about which CB to buy.

I'm not one to 'surf the channels', mainly just talk on 2 channels - so, what I'm wanting is a radio that's going to last, and can be modified easily (echo, talkback, 'tuned', etc).

The prices listed are from a single website - I know when it comes time that I'll probably be able to find for less (or not, don't know yet).

I've got about $150 to spend on a radio (cb/mic only) - which would be the best way to go:

Galaxy DX949 $139.95

Galaxy DX959 $159.95

Cobra 29 NW LTD $99.95

Cobra 29 WX NW ST $119.95

Cobra 148 NW ST - SSB $169.95

Personally, I use a Cobra 29 LTD Classic.

It is easier to get them worked on and the things they can do with versus the other radios with all the dings and bells and whistles just is crazy.

Get one fresh out of the box for right around $90.00 and go to a CB shop of good repute and get it peaked and tweaked put talk back in it and get a conn ex board installed.

It will sound just like a big Galaxy for 1/4 of the cost.

Echo if set correctly makes your voice sound very clear.

I run a Connex 3300HP, with a Dave Made competition kicker (which I rarely use), and an Astatic mike. The Connex is, by far, the best radio I've ever had.
If you get a Cobra, you're best to try getting one from when they were made in the Philippines, rather than the ones made in China. And avoid that SoundTracker.. it's a real pisser on your reception.
If you're looking for a good radio, that's not as high dollar as a Connex or General Lee, you may want to consider the Cobra 148GTL, or perhaps the Uniden Grant XL or PC78XL. I run my old Grant in my car, and it's a good radio. And I keep a PC78XL as my backup in the truck.
Of course, I avoid roger beeps, noise toys, and the like, because all I've ever seen them used for is for drivers to make asses of themselves. Roger beeps were made for sideband radios, which don't have a deadkey, like AM does. All it does on AM is annoy people. It kinda goes along with fog lights when there's no fog.

Anyone looking for a CB all I will say is stay far away from any Cobra with the Soundtracker feature on it. Pure junk IMHO.

If you like the looks of the Nightwatch radios check out the Uniden 78. They now have a version with the lit up face panel.

You really can't give all of the credit or blame to the CB, the antenna system is key yet I can't find a single CB shop that'll work on them. I'd like to find one that specializes in installing and tuning the right antenna(s) for maximum performance.

Also is it just me or is the right lane on some local streets a killer to your antenna also?. I've lost two already to overhanging tree branches.

As far as which CB to choose I've only had experience with Cobra and Uniden. I seem to have a grounding problem in my truck because I can hear electrical noise in the CB. I can't use the sleeper neon light or it just hisses for example. Both Cobras, including the 29 nw ltd I had couldn't handle it. By the time I squelched the static, I couldn't get any reception either and no one could hear me. That's why I think the Cobra is just snake shit. The Uniden I have now works much better, though I'd still like to get a big radio with a quality antenna setup.
