Please explain that term. I've heard it before, but what IS it? You mean the bullet is NOT fired down the "center" of the rifle barrel? I guess I'm a bit "dim,"... but, I just can't picture a weapon that fires a projectile from someting OTHER than a central barrel in line with the "powder" or firing mechanism.

As far as I can tell... even my Dad's .38 is a "center fire" weapon.

And.... what would be the "purpose" of a NON center fired weapon? To MAKE you miss your target? Or to MAKE you adjust the sighting for displacement AND "windage?" [subject, of course, to RANGE.]

Dang it! I KNEW I wasn't watching enough FauxNews lately! Where ELSE would I learn all this IMPORTANT stuff about military armament, and killing people, and "protecting myself" from those attacking DEER?

Center fire= the primer is set in the center of the case as in the .223,30-06 ect and can be reloaded by replaceing the spent primer, powder & bullet. And yes, a .38 is a center fire

Rim fire= the primer compound is place in the out edge (rim area) of a case and the fireing pin hits on the rear of the case at the edge. most commen use is the .22 Short,Long. Long Rifle and .22 Mag. Most others obsolete such as .22 Rem. auto., .25 Stevens Both were discontuined around WWII

I am perfectly happy with my little old Glock 33.. The wife loves her Glock 27... strictly for protection in this day and age of greed..

Thanks for the info, repete. I had heard the term but never knew about the rim fire "method." Is there any advantage to it?

rim fire is cheaper, for fun and target practice rounds.
it has a thinner case, so the rim can crush to ignite the powder.
You can't reload this brass, and they are limited to low pressure cartridges.

Thanks to you, too, Hoggie. You guys are great! As you could tell, I didn't realize "center fire" related to the cartridge. I was thinking about the barrel and couldn't picture a weapon not fired through the center.

Cheaper to make like Hog said. The brass case outside dia. of a .22 is .225( at the body and rim dia. .272 a small pistol primer (CCI#500) is .177. So even if you could custom make the brass it would be to thin to reload and thats not even thinking of safety.

As a side note, lots of people think a .22 is little more than a toy. I had a Ruger Mark1(.22LR) break a fireing pin and then as it cycled the next round fired as it went into the chamber. That caused the round that was in the mag on top to fire! It blew the mag out of the well and blew both grips off and ballooned the frame! My hand was numb then stinging for a couple hours but only had one small cut from flying brass.
Ruger manned up and fixed the gun no charge even tho it's about 40yrs old. Don't ya love a happy ending?
