Unions and Trucking
#1
Since we have started talking more about unions and trucking I thought that it would be interesting to see how many of you feel about unions especially when it comes to trucking. Whether you are a union member or have to deal with union workers at shippers I would like to get your opinions and experiences concerning unions, both pro and con. All opinions are welcome but let's try to keep it civil.

Never been a part of one but have had to work right beside them and behind them...........all they wanted to do is be lazy and pawn the heavy lifting to those not within their little union. Instead of getting the job down in record in time and going home to get some much needed sleep, we ended up working 3 hours past our normal schedule and didn't get any sleep. They always wanted to talk negatively towards us non unions guys and just drained morale.

I have had mostly positive experiences with union guys at construction sites. Most of the crane operators have been pretty decent. My main problem with the construction sites in general is that some of them don't value my time. I think the worst experiences that I have had with union workers has been at the steel plants with a close second at some grocery warehouses such as Publix.

I was going to click on the " I have been a member of a union and was satisfied" part of the poll but there was not such an option.

I am a member of a union, although not voluntarily. The union was voted in AFTER I started working there, it's a closed shop so I have no choice unless I leave.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. Thomas Jefferson- Democratic-Republican That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and, hence, is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Abraham Lincoln "America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." -Abraham Lincoln

It's weird. I've heard from my supervisors that some SYSCO houses are Union. We are not. I don't know a whole lot about Union, other than what I've read. I hear there are good things, and also bad things about it.
Honestly, I could care less about it, as long as SYSCO keeps their insurance, benefits etc.

My union keeps my familys medical insurance cheap, and keeps my wages in concert with other truckers doing similar jobs. The bad thing about unions is that only seniority gets rewarded. I have perfect attendence, high productivity, and safety awards, but I will lose a job bid to any employee who lacks those qualities because he has 1 more day of seniority than I do. So I wish my union could blend seniority and productivity when it figures who will get first pick for job bids.
