Yeah, Borg.... that's about how it works. I didn't immerse myself in the show, I just registered the basic info. It's very much like tree rings, and it goes back for centuries or maybe eons. But, somehow they can tell by the way the ice melted and refroze, how much of it, etc. IIRC, they can even measure the percentage of "particulates" in the ice, which tells them about volcanic ash in the air and such. It was pretty interesting. Now I wish I'd paid closer attention.

I "think" they are doing the same in other places like Antarctica, but it was obviously easier to get a film crew into Greenland.
