I also support the lowering of the literally STUPID speeds that are out there now.. and we still cannot figure out why we have a fuel price problem? We still cannot figure why we are forced to "meddle" in the Middle East? I think Hillary is not going to get any support for that idea.. but she's got my support on that!!!

Well, now that I had my fun, I will say this.

I would like to see some of you truckers slow down a little...some, if not most of us are happy doing the speed limit, even at 70 MPH....but a few of you, and you know who you are, don't like going down the road unless you see a flame following you in the rear mirror.

I mean really...what is so important you have to go 90+ mph to get to?

There are a couple of reasons we are paying such high prices for fuel. Lack of competition comes to the top of the list. Since the Feds allowed all of these major oil companies to merge, there is much less competition. Less competition results in higher prices. Second if government regulation. We won't allow oil companies to drill in some areas of the U.S. so we are importing more oil. Several years ago, oil companies were prohibited from raising the price of oil above a certain level if the oil was drilled prior to a certain date. The result was that many oil wells were capped and they started importing more oil which was not affected by the legislation. We now see domestic oil exported to countries such as Japan and in some cases it comes right back to the U.S. as imported oil. Most oil products have sales tax attached to the price, among other taxes. The higher oil goes the more money the government makes. It is a boon for the government for the price of oil to be high, contrary to all the rhetoric we hear coming out of Washington.

While slowing down might result in some fuel savings, cars seem to be traveling at faster speeds than ever. I don't see lowering the speed back o 55 will do that much to help reduce prices. There are way too many hands in the kitty.

There is also another thing we could do to reduce the demand for oil which I have never seen addressed. We use a tremendous amount of plastics in this country. Plastic comes from oil. If we went back to using glass and other natural types of containers, we could reduce some of our need for petroleum as well as reduce the size of our landfills. And most people think we get most of our oil from the Middle East. We get very little of our oil from that part of the world. However, we do import considerable amounts of oil from this hemisphere.

Coupled with the way they keep jacking around with the price at the pumps over the most mind-bendingly stupid speculation about things that might possibly happen.

Especially if we recycled them.

I'm not a big recycler, because I'm lazy, and recycling is too complicated. That's part of the problem too.

It's a really good point about plastic in everything GMAN. We could make a lot of stuff out of cellophane instead of plastic. We could make a lot of stuff out of wood instead of plastic too. I'm a treehugger, but trees grow back, and younger trees scrub more carbon from the atmosphere too.
