I was delivering my load to Pueblo the other day-my last load before going home after a grueling 3+ weeks. I was in Colorado Springs and this idiot Mercedes Benz not only cuts me off but right in the middle of the intersection.
I always think people with expensive vehicles will be more courteous and cautious which is a joke. I think if I had an expensive vehicle I would be more courteous and cautious. One of the determining factors for insurance rates is the value of the car; hence, when owning more expensive vehicles the higher insurance rates are. Therefore, I would assume people would be better drivers. NOT!!! I laid on my horn and turned the brights on-although that doesn't impact them much during the daylight. He just continued down the road at the same pace he was in while cutting me off. One of the worst times I've had other than driving in New England EECCKK!!!T I was stuck on Donner for 6 hours while it was snowing to beat the band. For you non Western State Drivers that's West of Reno on I-80-it's notorious for having to chain. I was on a hill and curve without the benefit of a shoulder to pull off on. I was just like 90% of the other drivers that say, "I'll never chain, I'll park it." Ha-that doesn't happen without a shoulder around. There were four 4-wheelers next to me with a Jersey Barrier on their left side. Upon the sixth hour the trailer decided to start sliding down the hill towards the four wheelers. Neither the trailer brake nor the tractor brake would hold the trailer. For some reason the foot brake would stop the trailer-can't remember the explanation for that. Whenever the trailer would stop sliding I'd get out and tell them that they better move. Would you believe none of them moved? I thought to myself, what kind of idiots would let a 53' trailer come down on them to be crushed up alongside a Jersey Barrier. I just couldn't believe it. I had done driveaway for the past 19 months [hauling new trucks] and we were forbidden from chaining the trucks. I took most of the trucks to Canada and could have had many opportunities to chain. It was my first month back to freight and I ended up having to chain. CHP came up to me and said, "Driver I thought it would have been common sense for you to chain." I said, "not six hours ago." It was a sunny blue sky day on the bottom on the Neveda side before ascending the summit and once you got up towards the summit it was snowing to beat the the band. Fortunately for me, there was a guy that was in a pickup that used to be a driver and he said he'd chain for me. There were two other drivers that had never chained either. One of them had driven 27 years. How unlucky I am that my first month I'd have to chain-I end up having to. EECCKK!!! We all decided that we'd pay him. He put 4 chains on for us each and we paid him $10 a tire. Well worth the $40. In the meantime, a four-wheeler in an old Bronco got stuck about six times and kept getting stuck in front of the "big trucks". I was really angry and told the other drivers on the CB if it were us we'd get fined. CHP was listening and called out to me by my company name [I was the only female on the mountain that day] that he'd be glad to give me a ticket. At that point in time, I shut up. Another driver defended me and said, "well she's right it isn't fair." CHP proceeded to say that they were just as upset having to deal with them on a daily basis-a small concilation for me! Yes, four wheelers continue to amaze and make me aghast!!! I tell everyone that I believe they are the single most "big danger" we face out here.

I neglected to mention in my last post that I was intending to chain but didn't want to do it with the four wheelers next to me. I thought if the trailer started sliding again and I got run over-who would stop the trailer from hitting the four wheelers. Hence, after CHP made them move that's when the pick up driver started chaining. Forgot to mention that thought process. Didn't want anyone to wander why I didn't chain earlier! UM!!! 8)

I was in a construction zone outside of Ripon, CA [highway 99 in central California] and the road was narrowing to one lane. I had let in about five 4-wheelers and was determined that the last one would wait for me. He jumped in front of me before almost hitting the CHP on the median shoulder.
Guess who CHP pulled over? You would be correct if you guessed me. He asked for my license, registration and medical card. Upon seeing that I wasn't a new driver and lecturing me I think he decided to let me go. He said, that I was supposed to let the four wheelers in. Yeah, I did five of them. I told him that it was dangerous for us to have them cut us off and that the four wheeler knew miles ahead of time. I was very disappointed because that just taught the four wheeler that he was right in waiting until the last minute and cutting off a big truck. I'm sure some of you will say I could have let him over. You would be correct. However, five four-wheelers at one time is more than enough for one truck in my opinion. If it narrowed down to one lane without much warning that may be another issue. However, when they have plenty of notice we could be stuck there all day letting every four wheeler in that decides to cut every one else off at the last minute. SIGH!! |
