Default WHY DID YOU BECOME A TRUCK DRIVER?

All of you who are professional truck drivers, what made you choose the profession?

If you couldn't drive a truck anymore, what else would you want to do as a profession?

I wanted to drive a truck because I've been fascinated with them since was a kid. When we use to go on our summer road trips for 3 months at a time, I would have albums of trucks photos and we'd stop out the truck stops to fuel up our motor home... I've always imagined myself being behind a wheel of some sort. I tried college for two years but it just wasn't working.

If I wasn't driving a truck, I'd be working down at the Union Pacific rail yard working my way up to being an engineer.

When my kids politely told me that it was time for me to "get a life", I considered a number of different new careers--and where I found myself, inside, at the time.
After losing the role of "responsible, full-time Mommy", I remembered my spirit of adventure...and truck driving is really fitting my need!
If I weren't trucking, I think I'd probably go back into home remodeling. I like the challenge and the coming up with solutions of both fields.

My dad is a driver my grandfather was a driver and my great grandfather was a driver. So it is kinda in the family. My uncles are also drivers. If i could not drive i would most likly run heavy equipment like bulldozers and backhoes or working on boats. Am tryin to get a job on boats right now.

It all started with a pile of dirt, a Tonka Truck, and poo in my shorts.

When this is over...I'd like to go back to pretending to be a Rock Star.

If I wasn't a trucker what would I be doing? I would probably be trading S&P E-mini's at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange? or fishing for Opilio Crab on the Bearing Straight.......

Honestly I don't know? Probably go back in the car business?

I became a trucker because I got tired of dealing with people.

Shortest training period, lowest tuition, greatest availability of advertised jobs seeking this qualification, plus some romantic gah-gah play with the big Tonka trucks rose colored daydream nonsense kind of daring me to do it.

The number one reason always has been money though. My university degree is useless to the job market, and going back to school isn't cheap, nor is it simple to deal with logistically.

I came for the money, and stayed for the money, but I obviously have some kind of right personality for the work too. Be that as it may, I started seriously looking to escape last July, and when I got laid off in February, I spent six weeks really trying my butt off to get into something else. There isn't anything else, so I came back with a mixture of regret and eagerness to go play with the big Tonka truck again.

I honestly don't know whether I love my job or hate it. I think both in about equal measure, simultaneously.

I'd like to be a writer, and perhaps I will be yet. I'd also like to spend a lot more time volunteering at jobs that don't pay anything, like cleaning up wilderness trails, and planting trees for the town.

I became a truck driver to get the ladies and show them I can drive a big bad truck

Actually it was an opportunity to get a better paying job than some of the factory jobs I had. I love truck driving but I hate traffic :/

it started out as something I always wanted to do. When I got out of the Marines, I ran OTR for a year and was about to give up on driving, when I got into LTL. The pay and home time are very good. I worked for a block mason one summer out of high school and promised myself I would never work that hard again in my life if i could help it. Now I ride in the a/c and jam to the xm every night. Beats the hell out of toting block and shoveling mud in the summer in central Florida!!!! If i was to quit driving I don't know what i would do. I would love an easy warehouse job, 5 minutes from the house, doing nothing, and working 7-330 every day, but I can't give up $15/hr pay cut to do it.

I'm 61 and I've been a bunch of things:
Auto mechanic, salesman, sales manager, self employed sales..a few others.

Now I'm a retired salesman. Don't have any interest in making sales calls anymore, I guess. And I have plenty of income. But I still need to work and I always wanted to drive a truck, so here I am.

My next life I'm going to the Merchant Marine Academy and make my career on and around ships....but I'll finish this one first.
