Dumb Rookie Question
#11
running a large diesel engine at low idle speed causes low combustion chamber temps, which limits the engines ability to burn the injected fuel
this unburnt fuel leaves the combustion chamber and condenses/drops out of the exhaust flow and ends up dripping from exhaust manifolds and turbo down pipes, etc ..... ie - slobber this unburnt fuel also passes the piston rings and causes cylinder glazing which generally requires engine tear-down to correct

They can, too. My old truck, I had no cruise, and no working manual throttle knob (that's a fun story in of itself) so I had to idle it at idle all night, for years. It got to where I would blow plumes of oil out the stack in the morning, because it was slobbering so much oil past the rings.

I limped home a long way one night running my headlights off the battery, when my alternator took a dump. I'll never do that again.
