i have a detroit 60 series engine on a 2000 century class,,,,, trying to change fuel filter...is all i have to do is unscrew cap at top? i done that and not sure what to do,,, clear container still over filter.. not sure how to get it off,,, anyone ever done this????


By the way i changed my own oil/filter/ lube today!!!!!!!!!!!!! whoaaaaaaaaa!!!! i got 2 cases of lucas(six in a case) for less than $75, 6.60 a gallon! oil filters were 4 bucks and fuel filter 2$!!!!!!

 

sounds like a davco fuel pro? you'll need to remove the large black ring where the clear housing meets the cast aluminum housing. change the filter element and then re-install the clear plastic cover, and then fill the filter through the cap you removed from the top

as a general rule ; if you pay 2$ for a fuel filter..., you got 2$ worth of fuel filter - you get what you pay for and, filters and oil are something i would never recommend buying on price. people generally do just that until they find out the price of an in-frame or a tow call

i've got some advice for you! ; leave the lucas where you found it, and spend the money you saved on oem filters and rotella... you'll be much further ahead IMO

 

I love Lucas, where did you get it at such a great price, I have been paying $19.00 to $22.00 per gallon for it.

 

OOPS, i didnt mean to say lucas, i meant to say Rotella for 6.64 a gallon, baldwin filter for 4 dollars,--only reason it was 2dollars was because of the discount i receive for being leased on to the company i pull for(not cuz they are cheap filters :lol: ) i know better than that...do i need to drain the fuel through the seperator b4 i try to remove the black ring where the plastic meets the housing????

drain it just down to the ring...................... you'll see how low it needs to be when you take it apart the first time... use a drain pan beneath

ok i just done it...i was wondering what the rubber seals were for that came with the filter but i figured that out........... i got er done...thanks a bunch!!!

 

Marcel, if you can get it apart, also change the bottom o-ring... or at least, be prepared for the day it starts to leak and suck air and drive you nuckin' futs until you figure out the problem! See my Davco posts from earlier... 8)

 

You mean the very bottom one right above where the release valve to drain is???

 

i have the exact same set up. make sure you clean area where bottom -of -o ring goes. if you dont & a peice of dirt gets stuck, it will cause air to get in. there should be a drain valve near bottom of sys to drain. if you drain all way till no fuel is visible, thats o.k. just make sure to pour some clean diesel in thru top just before replacing top cap. otherwise truck wont have enough fuel to pick up & stay running. they sell a specific tool to unscew the bottom& top cap if your going to be doing this it's worth buying. also make sure the rubber gromet in on the bottom of new fuel filter when installing. and last but not least. dont forget the spring that goes on top of filter. i dont use lucas oil treatment but at every oil change i do fill my filter up with lucas fuel treatment. not sure if it does any good or not.. any opinions on that??/ let er rip....

 

Depending on which model of Davco filter you have, it is the same O-ring on bottom as on top, same black plastic ring you spin off and on. If you have another model, it may be different.

Take a look at the Davco website. They have a lot of good info there. :wink:
