Yes indeed, Superior does rule! But in order to be a true certified tanker yanker there Devildog you have to get past Jack and Mike first AND, have a truck assigned to you there Freakshow!

Hey, since never stepped either of your little feet onto the deck of a naval vessel that went to sea (you probably wore go-fasters as well), would you like some old salt to throw into your cammies so you can at least look like a real Marine? I'm sure that after 4+ years sea time I have plenty I can spare ya!!! Not to be a wiseguy. But have you even pulled a load for Superior?

Yes, it's a good company, I left and came back with my tail between my legs, but it's nothing to go totally gah-gah over. Fact of the matter is freight is a bit slow, we don't drive the nicest equipment, and it's still truck driving.

The good - a management culture that embraces a bottom up approach (the guy doing the job is where improvement comes from), the guy driving is a professional and doesn't need baby sat, good benefits at a fair price to the employee, and driver autonomy.

Not trying to dampen your enthusiasm. But we are part of the overall economy and there ain't no denying that freight is slow, and a lot of noses are getting brown trying to get a few more miles (it doesn't work - better to keep your dignity!).

If I am out of line, I sincerely apologize.

Well Springfield is picking up. We just got a couple more accouts out of Indian Orchard. One ships to Fla. not sure what part yet and the load I just took to Lebanon Oh. DOW out of Allyns Pt. Ct. was keeping us rolling on alot of Canada runs so luckily we kept busy during the slow down, but the guys who can't go to Cananda were hurting. What term. you out of Ponce.?

I'm sitting in Kingsport, might take a walk to the school and see if I can find KY jelly, ooops there I go again. I mean KY 24. Ciao

Booby Trapped!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1/DSCN1889.jpg

Wait til what comes next!!!!! That is, if YouTube will upload the damn video! If not, I'll just describe the event as even if it makes it on here you won't be able to hear anything except everyone laughing at KY24...

While KY24 and the rest of class doing their Thursday lunch special, I infiltrated the classroom -lol- and changed his name tag to what shows in the pics (thanks to Harleypiper for the idea there!), and also set the booby trap underneath it, consisting of his dog-and-pony (compliments of Baby Bullseye and I). I hid in the spare room with a view directly across from his position as they returned. A few moments went by and nobody really noticed anything different about the name tag, not even KY24. After a few, I decided it was time to act and made a phone call to involve the head instructor (Jack) before they resumed class. As they were all "smoking and joking", Jack returned into the room asked KY24 what the heck was wrong with his name tag, as he's calling him KY Jelly now.

KY24 reaches down and picks up his name tag to discover the name change, but didn't notice his DAP (dog-and-pony). He immediately accuses Harleypiper of being in there and sabotaging him since Harley started the whole KY Jelly thing on here a few posts back. Now mind you, these guys in class have no idea who this "Harleypiper" character is so they're thinking he's nuts. But it gets better! As he's sitting his name tag back down he discovers his DAP and get s a classic "WTF!" look on his face and then realizes the true mastermind behind this ambush. So now he starts going off on this Cyanide/Carlo character and has everyone again wondering "Who the hell is he talking about?" Heck, Jack even played it off that he didn't quite remember who I was! So then he (KY24) goes into this big explanation to everyone about why I call him a DAPS for being a D.C. Barracks Marine, as he's proudly holding his action figure and waving it around. Then Jack finally informsl him that he's been had and captured on film. He scours the room looking for a camera and I, then finally notices the only place I could be to get a clear, unobstructed shot of the entire affair. Lots of laughter from everyone, and back to the normal class schedule.

Ponce... I am still extremely enthusiastic about the company at my 2.5 year mark, and am sure that many others share that sentiment. Jason has worked for a company that is one of the few that pays better than we do for being non-union, and I'm sure he is ecstatic that he isn't jumping from that into a position where he'll be getting screwed out of money, working for free, and dealing with silly b.s. games. Myself and Skywalker have spoke with him at great lengths about our experiences here and what can be realistically expected to achieve. I'm confident that he'll do very well here. The only issue I see him having is that he's never pulled tanks before, and will need to adapt his driving style to accommodate that. That and learning how to use the system to his advantage to maximize his earnings.

Notice I didn't say cheat the system, but use it. I run across far too many drivers that b**** and moan about not making any money because they're still in that mentality of having to run miles upon miles to make good money, and don't fully understand and/or use the pay package in their favor when away from their home terminal. The bad thing is many don't listen when I explain things to them. They'd rather gripe and complain so I let them be if that's what makes them happy! You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink... Or in the case of some of these drivers, an ass!

It may just be a job, but IMHO it's a job that I personally enjoy doing and am proud to say I do. Compared to all of the other companies I've driven for over the years, what Superior offers beats them all hands-down, even if you combined the best of what they offered. None of them offer the combination of home time and income like we do, especially considering my situation. On the flip side... No, it's not perfect here and no company ever will be, but for my family and I it's the best thing going.

I'm simply curious though, if you say driving here at Superior is nothing to get excited over then what prompted you to return other than the reasons you listed above, and where did you go and do after you left us before?

Howdy all... I just got done reading every single post on this thread... Yeah, 27 pages of them...

Anyway, I'm driving for Heartland Express now and they are about to break me. Also, I'm getting tired of the same old same old of dry van.

I don't have my tanker or HazMat, so I'm thinking of getting my tanker pretty quick and then looking at Carry Transit. Does anyone have any recent info on them or advice? I live just north of Knoxville, TN (about 100 miles from Kingsport). Do I need to live closer to a Carry terminal, or will this be o.k?

I'd like to have something where I'm out 5-7 days then home 1-2 with my family. Also, I need to know who to call about getting a job. I don't have any numbers for Carry/Superior... any of them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking at Carry because I don't have a HazMat (and never had). Please let me know what you think.

Also (for Cyanide) I think I met someone the other day who works on the same dedicated IC account you do. This was before I even started reading this post (and he got me thinking about Superior/Carry) a couple weeks ago at the TA in Seymour, IN. He was a Superior IC with a pretty new Freightliner Columbia. He told me the name of the place he hauls dedicated for, but I can't remember it right off. I know he said he gets lots of empty miles since the customer doesn't want anything else in their tanks. He was on his was back from delivering in AL. I never even got his name. I remember he said he was in his early 60's and driving a dark blue Freightshaker.

I sat in the seat to the immediate left when I was in class. Its kind of funny how the class never really got boring. I think everyone should visit The Mouse's Ear while in Kingsport :)

Were still hurting bad up here in Maine. Unfortunately we rely on the paper mills for work. Rumford has just annouced permanent lay offs of 137? employees. I only worked 3 days this week. Only was day was actually planned work. I luckily was called in for two days. One of which consisted of pulling tanks in and out of the wash bay all day. Pull a tank in, sit for an hour, pull a tank out and bring another in, sit an hour... all day. Took a few nice naps paid so I guess I cant complain.

I was definately a lot like Ken24 when I first started but Im definately more like Ponce now. I still enjoy it, its just the "newness" has worn off.

Back to business, all the silly stuff aside...

I know exactly who you met PA Fred! We only have about 13 drivers in Westville, so we all pretty much know each other. If not by name, by face or truck or in the case of a certain other, being off in the head and wearing shorts year-round with the exception of when at a customer or in a terminal. I'll mention no names  Anyway... Yes, about everything we do goes out loaded, back empty with the exception of a few loads where we'll grab a back haul from a sister terminal to get back to Indiana. I just did that myself last weekend; down to TX, then bounced over to our Pasadena yard and reloaded at La Porte, TX bound for Ontario, CAN then back down to Indiana.

But as a system company driver you will run a much higher amount of loaded miles and, when you're out sitting at a customer, another terminal, or anywhere else away from your home terminal and not rolling you'll be getting paid for it one way or another. You just simply must understand exactly how the pay package works. It's not hard to figure out, though some drivers try to make it out that it is and then find some excuse to b**** about how they're getting the shaft. Like an old saying that Skywalker, KY 24, myself, and I'm sure quite a few others adhere to goes, "ATTENTION TO DETAIL".

As for the extreme slowdown we are enduring now, it's only a matter of time before it passes and business will be back to normal. I myself am taking an extra couple of days off due to a lack of loads, and I'm going to enjoy it, just as I do with each and every day off be it scheduled or not. Even if I was stuck out on the road I'd make the absolute best of it (those that know me well understand that one!). The way I look at it is simple; if I'm not at home I'm going to make $$$ somehow, someway. This is where I find Superior to be everything I expected concerning pay and quality home time when I came here. If I'm not getting paid I can guarantee you I'll be home with my family. 'Nuff said!

Superior Carriers (January 1, 2009 to January 25, 2009)
Gross Pay: $4,776.64
Hub miles: 9,543 (Avg.: .50/mile)
Days Working: 18 (72%)
Days Off: 7 (28%)

Trust me, that time off number will steadily climb up throughout the course of the year! :lol2:

Hicksie 02-03-2009 02:00 AM

Hello all,
New to this board but have been reading this thread and another on another board and rob hooked me up here. Thanks rob.
Ky 24 first sparked my interest in this company at the other board and rob kept it burning. since reading this board i am very very interested in coming onboard and have made a few calls and have nothing but nice things to say about the people I have talked to.

My biggie at the moment and just from a time standpoint is I have to get my Haz-Mat back. I had it up till i renewed my D.L. the last time and droped t because i didnt need it and didnt wanna pay the bg check if I wasnt going to use it.
Thought i had some other issues about not having the 6 month recent otr as stated on website but have learned thru my calls im good there.

Was told if I get hired my term would be out of Atlanta.

Also let me say I talked to Carry to. Since i didnt have my haz-mat i thought that would be the way to go and must be, because all the trucks are full and TM told me he didnt see anyone leaving.
That was probably the most refreashing heart break i have had in trucking. Sad i didnt get the job but great to see the drivers are all very happy. Nice guy to talk to there.

So I am off to DL office today to start the Haz-Mat process. I knew i should of kept it.lol Oh well thanks for all the great info and thank you Rob for the heads up on this board and the other info you gave me.

Sorry for making this so long, but if you ever get to meet me you will see i like to beat my gums and chatter, Later all Im out.

*Sorry, unable to locate my actual hub miles for 2006 and 2007.

Hicksie... I went through the same thing with letting the HAZMAT go and having to add it back on. Mine only took a whopping four weeks from the initial trip to the D/L Office til getting my new license. Mind you that was in Florida and back in 2006. If you were told you'd be running out of Atlanta (Morrow) you'll be working for Ken and Leslie I believe, and sure BGH will confirm this or any changes there. Also, unless you were told otherwise, I'm not sure you can drive for Carry running out of Atlanta, as I have a friend who lives there and was told exactly that; either get his HAZMAT back and drive for Superior or not at all. However, stranger things have happened!

kentucky24 02-03-2009 01:28 PM

H

Why not start at Carry until u get your hazmat endor then transfer to Superior

However, stranger things have happened!

Yes, Kenny and Leslie are the dispatchers outta ATL. Kenny is an old hand thats been around and is a damned good dispatcher. Leslie mainly does anything that has to do with pay and handles some dispatch. Barry is our terminal manager and the big boss man.

Thanks all for info on Atl.
Let me clear myself up a little on Carry. I dont live in Atlanta im 150 miles north in WNC a small town on state line. I talked to Carry in Decatur Al. they manage the Spartanburg SC. term also. What he told me is with where I live that would be where I would go. They have 3 trucks there. Just lost an account due to economy and 1 driver is sitting alot and they are trying to get him back up and going because they are more dedicated accounts there. Thus the 3 trucks handled them. And he went on to add the frieght there was slow and his drivers were happy and didnt expect to see them leave any time soon. Which to me says alot about a company.
You guys have gave so much great info. Thank you all.

As for me, I go to get finger printed today if the roads and the place i gotta go are open. Snowed here a little and this place freeks out when they see white. Gotta drive over to asheville about 70 miles to get the finger printing done. Once that is done and get my ok back to DL office to get the endorsment and my license. Which is ok because I have to renew them in April anyway. Just gonna take me a little time to get all my ducks in a row but I really wanna work with you guys and I'm working hard to do it.

Hickse

Hang in there good things come to those who wait. Just get your stuff in order (hazmat) and all will be good in the end.

I said gah-gah... and stated all the obvious positives about working at superior. I love working at this place, and dig the off the wall places we sometimes deliver to.

Having never been in the Service, I must have missed some of the humor ya'll were sharing. Anyway's, my head at the time was "this guy hasn't pulled a single load and he's going off like he just one the lottery." Next month after running I78 into Jersey with 45,000 he may think this is the worse decision I ever made!!

Anyways, welcome aboard to KY24/Jelly. Didn't mean to rain on any parades, or tinkle on a fire hydrant.

I have a question.

My #1 goal is to work for Superior. But the job I am in now has had so many changes that I hate it. I HATE the idea of getting out of bed in the morning and going to work to have to deal with the folks I have to deal with there now.

So my question is this, would it be a good idea to work for another tank company pulling non haz-mat stuff like food grade till I can get my endosement back on my DL for haz-mat?

I had talked to Oakley and seem to think I can go to work for them but talk is as far as it went. Also they want you to get haz-mat in 90 days after being hired and pay a little more for it. .05 cents i think she said. My only thing is I dont know anything about them good or bad.
Have a van gig I was suppose to call back on this week and have'nt done it yet because there saying plan on being out 3 weeks even if your not just plan on it due to economy and frieght.

So if any of you long time tanker yankers could give the noob wanna be a tanker yanker some advice or info on Oakley I would be very Thankful.
Im out

Cyanide 02-05-2009 11:17 AM

Hicksie, if I were you I'd stick it out and wait for the HAZMAT, especially if that's the only thing preventing you from being hired here at Superior. I never worked for Oakley and have heard good about them however... They are still a Florida-based "easy" food-grade company and that's not a good thing in my opinion or others who've went down that path in the past, yet have long since moved on. Oakley is nowhere near as bad from observation as their brethren Indian River/North American Tank Lines and Bynum, but they really aren't that far ahead either. Let's just say they are the lesser of the evils.

This info is almost a year old but will give you a good comparison as to what many companies pay and offer for benefits.

Thanks for the advice and the info Cy. I am thinking I might just do that. Just sucks getting up and talking yourself into going to a place ya hate lol. Use to be a good place but the new district suit is a top down guy and we are just all peon's that are not worthy to polish his shoes. But im thinkg another month, month and half I think I can handle plus its one less job to put on an app. Thanks again:clap:

Today I was asked if id go into a sleeper truck, I said I would. When I came to this company I told them id do regional, but soon after I was hired personal things changed and made it hard to be gone from home so I was looking for just local. So luckily without them knowing what was going on I ended up in a day cab which thrilled me to death. Its been 4 months now and it came the time for them to ask. Im not one to go back on my word so I accepted. They said if I didnt like it theyd put me back in a day cab.

In a few ways its DEFINATELY a positive. Im 6'2" and its damn near impossible to be comfortable in a day cab. I cant sit in a seat thats basically straight up and down in the back. My back problems have now come back from it. MORE MONEY!!!!!!! I made $200 last week, and this week I spent 2 days melting, chipping and shoveling ice at the terminal just to get hours. My truck will have more balls. The 370 just doesnt work pulling tri-axles. Ill finally have room to put things, with all the crap we carry imagine keeping it all in a day cab. I can nap while unloading/waiting w00t!

The only thing that worries me is my mapping skills, and directions. Funny coming from a truck driver but im scared ****less of getting lost. Its not like were driving 4 wheelers and can just bang a u-turn. So once I get my taxes back ill invest in a GPS.

One more day in 2361 then its hello 2040.

You would probably make more money if you ventured out into the system. Once you are away from that home terminal they either keep you moving making money or they pay you layover.

DDCavi 02-07-2009 03:21 PM

Luckily they had one more truck to choose from so I chose 2156. 2040 had some issues. I wont be in the system, ill be running regional. Still more miles for me.

Double check your GPS routing against a real map, and the local directions on your travel order. I am not sure what kind of truck the TRUCK setting on my GPS is for, certainly not my Superior truck! If your travel order states Interstate 12345 Exit 2, then do that. Since our travel orders rarely give any distances (or street names) the GPS gives some reassurance that you are getting "warm"!! Other than that a GPS is fun for planning stops, locating truckstops, finding a bar - I mean restaurant, etc., etc.

After a while you won't need your Motor Carriers Atlas, and the GPS will just be another toy. Plus these tankers can turn on dime compared to a 53' van.

You will have a blast and start making some loot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
