You are lucky CAD shut down the old thread due to a pi$$ing match or you would never get any sleep. It was huge.

Hello all,

I am curious about the super single tires that TMC are running.

What is the tread life in your experience?

Is there a ride difference?

Do you prefer them over the doubles?

I drive for another company that uses super singles (Michelin X1) and I haven't had any problems with them. My truck has 254,000 miles and still has originals with decent tread left. Mine have worn very evenly.

I'm told the ride is marginally better, but I've only driven OTR using these. The reasons companies prefer them is less weight (each set of four saves about 500 lbs vs duals and steel rims), less cost per mile and a much lower chance of blowouts due to the much increased sidewall strength. They also, allegedly, provide 4% or so better fuel economy due to reduced rolling resistance and, I assume, the lower weight.

I too had them on my truck but aside from the "bad ass" look they provide, I'd rather have duals. Driving flatbed you sometimes encounter less than perfect terrain and often run over sharp objects (steel rebar hidden in the dirt for example) and getting a flat single means you are stuck there waiting for a tire change. Getting a flat on ONE of your duals, you could still roll on to a truck stop and get it fixed. As for rolling resistance, singles have MORE rubber on the road than duals so their rolling resistance would be HIGHER than duals so I'm not convinced about the MPG ratings.
This being said, if I were an owner orerator, I'd opt for the duals, they are safer in my opinion and won't leave you stranded. Working as a company driver with a nice looking, decked-out Pete 379, I'd prefer the super singles for their looks alone. Repairs would be the company's problem and as a company driver, you're never really stranded as they are ALWAYS watching you and trying to get you to your drop-off YESTERDAY.

Tread life is outstanding, I've driven both and like the ride quality of the singles over duals, see my post above for which I prefer.

I'm weighing my options as I type this! lol... My girlfriend's still in court proceedings with a child custody battle so until that's sorted out (hopefully by January) I can't commit to any particular company. If she wins, I'll go local to be home daily, if she looses, I'll probably go OTR long-haul and bring her along.
Time will tell!
