Default Sysco Foods

Well i have an interview at Sysco next week. Interview, road test and pre-trip.

Teamsters Local 500 20.86/hr starting rate.

When i talk to the HR guy on the phone he said the road test is also backing into a dock. This is my problem. As many of you know i never drove a VAN or Reefer. So i never had to worry about docks. I dont think it will be that big a deal. But any input will be helpful.

I need this job to get back on my feet. Plus the benefits are crazy. He was going on and on about the benefits. Looking at 60-70k a year with OT and home every night. Steady all year round work.

Sounds good..

I don't think you'll have any trouble backing up to a dock.
You shouldn't have any problems getting hired.

Just aim for the hole!!!!!!!!!!! If you can back a trailer, you can back into the dock.

Now, when it comes time for you to back into an alley(blindside) off a two lane in downtown Philly, then worry:lol:

I couldn't back worth a crap in training. After I got out to the shippers and recievers I never had problems. Best advice is to just stay calm and take your time. Don't worry if it makes other drivers upset that you pull up a couple of times. Even the old hands have to sometimes.

I've been to Sysco in Miami,Fl a lot. Always liked unloading there. They were fast to unload and never had to pay a lumper. That's the best part. Plus they always let me park on their lot overnight. As a lot of you guys know parking isn't plentiful in Miami.

When I lived in Delaware, I worked part time for a company,(3days a week). We delivered Purdue yard bird to all 5 bouroughs in NYC, Long Island, Hunts Point meat market and we did a backhaul out of the Hunts Point produce market.

Anywho, the worst stop I remember was in the "Jamacia" part of Queens. It had 2 doors back in a "hole" and one of the holes always had a trailer in it, (storage). But it was a 2 lane street, and just the street, also with a telephone pole on each side of the hole you were back into and one across the street on the sidewalk that you REALLY had to watch at the front of your truck.

Now I don't like to brag, (but I will anyway), I'm REALLY good at backing but HOLY GUACAMOLE!!! It took 3 or more shots to get into it WHILE people are going up on the sidewalk in front of you to get around you, honking, fingers, the whole shabang, AND it was on the DRIVERS side. Really tight.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Those streets and buildings date back to horse and buggy days.
One of my drops, I had to wait for a break in traffic on a 4-lane to swing all the way left to line up to hit a right hand turn onto the road I needed.
That road had cars parked on both sides and I'd have just inches for clearance.

I went forward down an alley in Louisville last fall, that was a bear! I had to fold all my mirrors in...and the hand-holds on the stack guard and sleeper fairings just barely cleared the power poles and ser lines on the walls of the buildings. Longest 2 blocks of my life!
