Surprise, I never worked for them - but I have an opinion

I was in a Loves truck stop the other night. One of their drivers pulled in going about 35 mph. Slammed his truck into a parking space. Surprised he didn't hit anything - he was in High Range reverse and had it floored. He sat there for maybe a half hour. Then raced out of the truck stop. I am just sitting there drinking a beer and wondering what the heck is wrong with this guy - driving like a total maniac in a truck stop - sure as heck wouldn't want to be around him on the highway. His truck was filthy - I can understand road grime, but it looked like he cleaned his windows and mirrors with a grease rag.

My conclusion -

1. Guy was just a total pig.
2. PTL had really gotten to him
3. Found out his wife was free agent with his best friend.

Option 3 is unlikely. I know there is supposed to be someone for everyone, but this clown just may be the exception.

I deduced it was Options 1 & 2.

Hope this helps.

I worked for PTL as a company driver several years ago for a couple of months. I would have stayed longer, but at that time I made more money in break down pay than I did driving. They were short on trucks as they were having drivers turn in the old ones before having replacements, plus they were doing two a week orientations. I was lucky to get a truck, but the thing had problems and was constantly breaking down on me.

The available truck issue at that time was ridiculous. Average wait when I went through orientation for a truck was 1 week. When I started having breakdown problems it was up to 2 weeks. At that time they paid new hires $80 to sit in a motel and wait. Current drivers who were waiting on a new truck were paid $100 a day.

The pluses.

No forced New England or Canada: Extra pay if you choose to go into either one.
No forced loading or unloading.
No problems getting break down pay or getting them to pay for a motel if need be.
Paycheck always correct.
Nice terminal in Murray.
Never a problem getting home
Good runs when truck was running.
Most trailers had air slide tandems.
Usually realistic pick up and delivery times and no problems getting appointments reset if need be.
No problems getting layover pay.

Like I said if it had not been for the truck and being unable to get in a different one I would have stayed a lot longer than 2- 2 1/2 month.

I don't understand why the driver you seen MBA had such a dirty truck. When I was there drivers were routed through a terminal with a truck wash on a weekly basis and it was mandatory the truck and trailer get washed every visit. In fact at Murray you could not leave the fuel bay without going through the truck wash unless it was after 7 pm. Also the wash bay was not an automatic one. They washed them by hand.

Of course this was about 5 years ago, so who knows what may have changed since then.

An interesting statement. Have not been able to figure out why someone would want to sit in a truck in a truckstop and drink.

Just another low-paying run-of-the-mill OTR coolie carrier. If you're broke, homeless, or have no other options they might be OK. Otherwise avoid them like the plague.

Don't know why anyone would want to sit in a truckstop period.

Cold

Actually they pay more for orientation and training than other carriers. I dont know how many miles a week they average.

What trucking company would u consider better than run of the mill COLD?? If u were based in St.louis and wanted to be home as much as possible?

thanks
