You do realize that these MEGA cARRIERS likw Werner an d Swift get Government funding to train these new hires , And that while they are on the truck in training good OL' Uncle same is paying the weekly salary ...Sometime Uncle sam pays the first year of the new drivers salary...

Did you know that a truck that is driven by a trainer is covered 100% if it is wrecked while assigned to a certified trainer be it wrecked by the student or trainer or by another truck . This truck is usually had back by the company for pennies and used for parts or a possible glider kit .

Big companies Like Swift and Werner do not pay $100,000 for new truck infact I rember speaking with my first dispatcher who had 30 years with Werner , and they pay about 53k for brand new Pete,KW,Freightliner...they turn around and sell these trucks for 10-20k more than they paid for them new . And while Werner runs these new trucks for about 350k miles they only pay basic things like wiper/fluid as the truck is still covered under it origional bumper 2 bumper warranty .

If you do the math on money handed out to these Mega carriers for putting "NEW" drivers behind the wheel...Why would they want new drivers to only come in at a trickle when they technically get free labor with the government paying for their "NEW" drivers ...And if you hang around a company like werner you would think they to be more in the TRUCK sales business than freight selling the trucks they bought super cheap with theuir "DEALERS" license for 10 20k more than they paid...

Driver turn over in the big OTR companies is simple it comes down to money ,and a basic lack of it for the driver for his/her efforts/time . Yes it's a demanding job as far as time away from home ,but it really boils down to not being paid well for this time away from home .

Thanks for enlightening me there. I had no idea the government had such a big stake in the trucking industry in that respect. More wasted tax dollars. What is the governments incentive to dole out all that $$ when the companies are revolving doors? Is the government doing this to get people employed thus widening the tax base?

No wonder the industry is so messed up. It's never good when the gov't has its hands in anything.

My guess is that it's what big business wants , as it keeps the cost of hauling their goods to market cheap .
