Yeah, vito, I agree!
Sometimes I get a kick out of it. And sometimes I would like to kick the crap out of someone responsible for some things we needlessly put up with. But such is the life of a trucker. It's almost like being a Notre Dame fan. You win some. and then, man can you really lose some. But it could be worse. You could be a Michigan fan.

Both of those statements are total truth.
If you want to be rich as a "trucker", you better own a company the size of JBHunt...or be willing to work hard long hours, as the owner of 8 or 9 trucks. Or...WIN the Lottery.
If your going to drive a truck for a living, you damn sure need to know what it is that YOU want in life, then find the job that will give you the opportunity to make the $$$ to support that life. If you have a "scruffy" history, don't expect the people whom hire drivers for the "Premium" jobs, to hire you, especially if you don't have an impressive work history. You want the premium dollars and the premium job, you have to earn it, by applying yourself and proving you can do "Premium" work.
Not every driving job, is suitable for every driver, nor is every driver suitable for every driving job........something to remember in life.

Big T - I know I'm a little late coming into this conversation, but as far as USX's advanced student program goes all you have to do is spend 100 hours behind the wheel with a trainer in the jump seat. This typically takes 2 weeks to complete. As far as being stuck with a trainer for 6 weeks, that wouldn't happen. Their new student program is 150 hours behind the wheel. The only unfortunate thing is even with your local experience, once you upgrade to a first-seat driver you won't get paid for any of it. But, they are also one of the few companies that have a program to get you driving OTR without going back through driving school. Hope that helps in your decision.

NEVER listen when a recruiter tells you your timespan of training in "weeks". No insurance company says "Train them for (insert number) weeks."
Ask them how many hours of training they will have you do.
Driver A may be on a truck for 2 weeks, and only run 4,000 miles and get limited training.
Driver B may be on a truck for 2 weeks, and run 5,000 miles and get a tad bit more under his belt.
Do not let your recruiter dazzle you with "averages". The truth is that they do not know true averages. They read everything from a peice of paper. You can ask them to get real figures for you. It can be done by getting with an ops manager and simply asking "How many miles are your drivers averaging this month?" FM's won't bullcrap with a recruiter, and they will tell them "1,900 a week is what's gonig on right now. Freight's slow with us." or whatever the case may be.
Right now, things aren't going too bad in OTR, but they have been better.
P.S. - I'm no longer in recruiting. I have "upgraded, if you will" to operations and now see the truth of the industry a bit better.
The "2 week" training program is actually 100 hours BTW.
