hello,
Has anyone driven or is driving for the united states postal service. And i'm not talking about driving a jeep and deliver mail. Although if you have done that or are doing that, i would like to hear about that as well. I'm talking about tractors.

There are many contractors that haul mail. I know that Bancroft & Sons haul mail. So does Alan Ritchey. Both companies are based in Texas.

Anyone know what it pays.. There is a "USPS TERMINAL"(not sure what it's called really) right near me. I see lots of companys in and out, few decent looking trucks.. though most look pretty run down...

Maybe you can go to their website, and see if they have career options. Serbie, I see ads in the Dallas/Ft Worth papers about mail contractors, needing drivers. For what I have seen, the pay averages around $17.50-$18 + an hour. May vary from different contractors, different areas, etc.

I know that in Jersey 90% of the USPS trucks I see are contracted out. Even the ones that look 'legit' have some small print on the drivers door that tells you who they are really running for. I don't know anything about them other than that.

I don't think you'll ever find a job with the actual USPS hauling mail with a tractor trailer because they contract it all out. At least they used to and I highly doubt they've changed things. I used to haul mail years ago on a straight truck from the Cincinnati Annex (which is the official name for a USPS terminal serbie, just fyi) to outlying post offices. For Annex to Annex service they used tractor trailers, but those were bid routes for contractors also. When I ran it, the contractor that I worked for had every route from Toledo to Louisville, but it has been broken up quite a bit since then. Now, there are many different contractors that haul it around this area.
All mail routes have to pay a prevailing wage to the driver, it's part of the bid contract, and I'm sure this applies to combination drivers also. I ran Annex-PO for a year at $13.92 per hour and had just recieved a raise that put me over 14 bucks when I left there, but this was 18-19 years ago and that was the rate for a straight truck, combination was higher. I'm not absolutely certain on the exact wage, but I just saw an ad from a contractor in the paper a few weeks ago hiring for a run from Cincy to somewhere in PA and I believe it was $22.?? per hour. It also required 2 years experience. MCA is the name of one contractor around here, but there is one huge one here and their name escapes me. Their not hard to find, they are required to have "U.S. Mail" plastered on the truck and trailer, but if you look closely on the tractor you'll find the contractor name. Look for the trucks in your area and call em up.
