Default How easy is it to find a trucking job that is nights only?

hey, I'm a 25 year old male that trades stock options but I don't make enough doing it right now to make a secure living. The market is open from 9:30AM to 4:00PM. Is it possible to find a trucking job where I could be home at those times during week days? Actually I only need to check my stock charts a couple times a day, would it be possible to take a laptop with me in the truck? thanks!

How long would you spend most days checking the market twice per day?

If you could work that into a couple of 15 minute breaks you may be able to do that with any driving job. All you need is a wireless aircard and your laptop computer can have internet access anywhere. You may get an hour here or there as well to do some research, but some days even a 15 minute break is going to be hard to fit into your schedule.

Some jobs are night jobs, like UPS or FedEx, but some of those will take some experience to get. It depends on what is available in your area.

thanks for the info!

how would I find out about a FedEx or UPS job? I think I would like one of those.

it wouldn't take long to look at the charts I need to, probably would take 10 min. or less twice a day.

I've been looking for a job for months now. i live in a town with a population of 12,000. I've just been looking at the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina website but they never have anything good. There are two listings for tractor trailer drivers in a town 15 minutes from me that's what got me interested. one of them has a salary of $50,000 and the other $55,000. It says I need 1 year of experience though.

matt many local jobs require you to work nights till you got seniority. i have been doing a little online trading and im thinking of quitting my local job and going over the road with a laptop. my friend quit and sold his house and went cross country with interstate dist and he is buying a lot more shares than i am. people out west get up real early for the opening bel.im sure you will do well

Unless you luck out and find the perfect fit most driving gigs open to newbies are going to be an on-call 24/7 type of thing.

One possibility would be to work the evening shift as a package lumper at UPS. The pay is only ~9/hr but you get good bennies. Its sort of a special case where your benefits are worth more than your take home.

Its not for everyone but its a good deal if you need some income but want most of your normal hours for other pursuits.

If you stick around for 6-10 years you can get a real job in a package car or feeders (trucks).

I know FedEx Ground also needs package humpers but I'm not sure if you get bennies.
Other LTLs need forklift jockeys for 4-6 hrs in the afternoon and evening.

I believe on ups.com you can apply online. Or their website will have the information on who to call.

The company i work for will not allow use to have 2nd jobs. The DOT says you can not have 2 jobs cuz of the hours you work at the 2nd job would count as hours on your driving job. So say at your day job you work 6 hours. That all ready puts 6 hours on your driving time for night. Thats what my company says i dont know how true this is. So dont hold me to it.

The DOT does not say that you can't have two driving jobs. You just have to be sure that you stay legal with your hours combining the hours totals of all jobs (as if it was only one job). Obviously if you get alot of hours on your main job that might not leave you many hours available for any second jobs. Technically, I believe the DOT says that ALL jobs, even non-driving jobs, count toward your total hours if you are a commercial driver, although that always seemed strange/unfair to me. Of course your company could have their own policy that prevents you working a second job I suppose, as mentioned by Mackman.

Around here, alot of companies that haul gas use drivers for night-only shifts, home daily.
