I believe that if your day job is driving but doesn't require you to run a logbook that it doesn't matter how many hours you accumulate between the two jobs. But if you have one job that you have to run a logbook and you have a second job but don't count the hours on your logbook, you are in violation of HOS regulations. You might be able to get away with it but if something happened like an accident or something and they found out that you had a second job and wasn't counting the hours they would nail you.

Just go to your nearest UPS service center and apply. You start part time and can work into a full time job. if you want. The job is called "sorter" and it's where almost all UPS employee's start. You load/unload, sort packages and assist the package car drivers. Pay is in the 12.75-14hr range and will go up on our next contract. Benefits are given after a certain amount of hours. Been there, done that. Still there....(just not in the "sort" or package cars anymore.)

Hmm..Pay has gone up a bit. Back in 2000 when I was hired for the AM sort shift it was 8.75/hr. I left after a week as it was a 40min drive for 3-4hrs of work was just not worth it. I was in College and already had benefits via my parents at the time.

Depending on where you live it can take 6-10+ years to get out of part-time purgatory and into a package car or tractor.

This is written from a UPS insiders perspective but a lot of what he talks about is relevant to any LTLer:

Talking to the Brown guys here in Reno its about 8 years right now. Once you become a made man in the brown mafia its one of the best company jobs in trucking.

does UPS have jobs that work sometime between 4pm and 8am? I can get to the closest UPS store in a little over 15 minutes. Working 3-4 hours part-time would suck, I wouldn't want to have to do that for more than a month or so.

By "store" I hope you don't mean one of those "UPS Stores" you see in the mini-malls. Those are not operated by UPS, but by a franchisee. You need to find a UPS terminal in your area. And yes, pay increases for part-timers was a big deal on the last contract. It's supposed to go up even more on the next one. They also have created more part time to full time positions..

Like feederfred said, you need to find a Center... look on UPS.com and look for the places with "customer care" centers. Not UPS Stores.

I'm on a call back list after this past Christmas season to go back to the package center... a job I fought hard for at that. My uncle has driven feeders for years and years and couldn't think of doing anything else. Not a bad way if you can survive the battle up the food chain.

If you live near a company terminal you can get a local delivery type job.
