I guess yall know that Florida has some new coaches...
Will Muschamp is their head coach. He was the defensive coordinator at Texas. I'm not a fan of Texas, but I've always liked Mack Brown, and Muschamp, if that makes sense. I believe Muschamp would be a good head coach. He's a defensive coach, but I think he would do well. (not saying I am hoping Florida will do well )Here is something that I don't understand. Muschamp brought Charlie Weis to be the offensive coordinator at UF. It could be that I am missing something, but why would you hire a coach that ran a premier program even further in the ground to be your offensive coordinator? Could it be that Weis is a good coach, but not a good head coach? I'm assuming that he will be helping with recruiting for the offensive side, and I can't help but think about his tenure at ND, and we know how that went. I have been scratching my head on this one.. Charlie had too much on his plate at ND. He is a heck of an offensive guru and there was no doubt that he could recruit good players on offense. The problem at ND was that their D was abysmal under him. There was no D in Notre Dame simply put. Muschamp is a defensive man, he's going to need help on the offensive side, Weiss is perfect for that. I've always believed that defensive coaches make the best head coaches. You don't need much of an offense to win if you have a defense that is a beast. Look at the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Bucs as prime examples of that thought. Neither had an offense that would simply outscore you, no, all they needed was the offense to put a FG or TD on the board and the defense could hold that slim lead the rest of the game. I think Florida may shock everyone this year in the SEC.

I've also always liked defensive minded head coaches. Mike Leach is an offensive coach. He put Texas Tech on the map, and while he was there, Tech had the best winning record, ever. In my opinion, I don't think he had a very good defense. Ruffin McNeill, which is now the head coach at East Carolina, was Leach's defensive coordinator. I'm not saying that McNeill wasn't good, but I think Leach would have had even more success if his defense was as 'good' as his offense.
Back to Weis,... The only thing I could think about was his tenure at ND. Guys on talk shows are highly respectable of him, and they seem to like him, and Muschamp at Florida. Apparently, I don't know Weis that well. I probably jumped the gun. I didn't realize that (what you said about him). I don't keep up with Notre Dame, but I see the highlights, and what not. I do know that ND has gone down hill in the last several years.

Ruffin better be careful, his days look like they are numbered at ECU after just 1 season. He had Skip Holtz' recruits who Skip took to back to back C-USA titles in 08 and 09 and 4 straight Bowl games. Yes they went last year under Ruffin at 6-6 but they got smoked by Maryland. Ruffin did do a fine job at TT though. They improved in every category under him. Some people just aren't cut out for being the head man and I'm afraid Ruffin is going to be one of those just like Weiss.
Leach would just simply outscore you to win. Great idea if you have the people to do just that, ask your D to make just 1 stop and it's your game. |
