The BCS sucks! Period! And I am tired of it! Time for a playoff. The BCS drives me absolutely bonkers and it helps me cope with its stupidity to come up with something that would actually work. Check it my 6 rules of Bowls and Championships. Yeah, I was busy over lunch.
Rule #1: If you do not have a winning record, you should not get a bowl bid. That means, if you are 6-6, you are S.O.L. Buh Bye Iowa, New Mexico, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Minnesota, & Miami. If you cannot play above .500 ball, what makes you think you should go to a bowl? As big a college football fan as I am, I won't watch a single one of those games because those teams absolutely do not deserve to be playing.
Rule #2: Ditch a few of the bowls. There are WAY too many bowl games and it tarnishes the goal of getting to a bowl in the first place. 7-5 should even be a longshot to get to a bowl and a bowl with an actual sponsor in it's name is a joke. Come on...the Meineke Car Care bowl?
Rule #3: During each team's season, eliminate one or two of those creampuff games and make it an 11 game season if your conference does NOT have a championship and a 10-game regular season if your conference DOES have a championship. That means, every team at the end of the season has an either above .500 or below .500 record with 11 games played and you are bowl eligible with a winning record only. When all the bowls are completed, all non-BCS Bowl teams will have played 12 games, 4 BCS teams willhave played 12 games, 2 BCS teams will have played 13 games, and 2 will have played 14 games to decide the champion. 14 games too much you say? After the bowls this year, 9 teams will have played 14 games, so that argument doesn't work.
Rule #4: You are not allowed to host your own bowl, ever again. No more Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl; No more Boise State in the Humanitarian Bowl. From now on, you travel just like every other team.
Rule #5: The BCS stays AS IS, but is used to facilitate an 8-team playoff. Let the best team win the title outright on the field. Never again, will there be controversy. The best team will actually WIN the whole shootin' match by virtue of their play.
Rule #6: That said, you will need 6 BCS bowls, not including the Championship: Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, and Rose Bowls are joined by the Cotton and the Peach Bowls. Rotate them around like before for first round and second round.
An added bonus to having a playoff is that the two teams playing for the championship will be playing at their best and not rusty like they are today after 2 and a half months layoff.
Now, the bowls as they SHOULD be THIS year, keeping in mind that another half dozen of these bowls should probably be ditched, as indicated:
