As to "not having one's license ON him", would a truck driver set off driving without his drivers license? His logbook? His waybills? It is part of the job AND if one wants to engage in amateur radio, he should have his license ON him anyway. I'm never without mine.

No matter what is done about the invasion of unlicensed people on amateur and other frequencies, somebody will probably be inconvenienced in some way.

There are CBers on some other boards inquring about the use of 15 Meters and what those "channels" were for. Chances are their equipment won't cover that much space.........................yet. However, it is not unreasonable to believe that these outlaws will plop their keisters down on that band eventually. The "export" builders would be most happy to oblige such a market. So WHERE is it to END? Just sit there and moan about these thieving b*****ds and do NOTHING? OR take action to eliminate the source of the majority of illegal activities? It IS a FACT that most these illegal transmissions come from commercial trucks. The way to stop it is to go right to the source: Ban the illegal "export" radios in commercial trucks.

Sure, it would, perhaps, inconvenience a few as no solution is perfect.

BTW, there is a long thread about the "chicken banders" on 10 Meters over on QRZ.

My point about Barney Fife was simply most L.E. don't know anything about radios and their actions can cost you big bucks. As I said I lived through the KC law and I can see the same thing happen if your idea caught hold. Inconvenience is one thing but when you are talking about hundreds of dollars that is something else.

Maybe I shouldn't tell you but if you promise not to tell -- There have been illegal operators on all the "ham" bands for years. Way before the truckers ever heard about 10 meters.

If the FCC seem this as a real problem they would take some real action. They can, if they wanted to, cut the source of these illegal radios. It would appear they don't see it a major problem. And to be frank I don't either. I don't condone their use but I don't see it as a big deal either. They operate in a portion of 10 meters where for the most part hams don't use. Their range is such they don't stay in a given area long enough to cause much problems.

I have not doubt there are a few "hams" bitching about illegal 10 meter operations. However, I'd bet a cup of coffee most of these bitchers have never heard one of these illegal operators. It is one of those -- I heard about a guy that heard it from a guy that this was going on. I don't get on the QRZ board but maybe I will and ask just how many of these hams have heard one of these illegal operations. Might be interesting don't you think? I might also ask how many of these "hams" even turn their radios down to these frequencies. You want to make a bet on how many even use this portion of the band?

Maybe I'll set up a scanner on these known frequencies and see what I can record. I happen to live close enough to several major highways and truck stops and terminals if it is going on as bad as you claim I should have tape recorder full in a very short time. You want to make a bet on how long it will take to get a hour's worth of recording? I'm betting I won't have a hour's worth of recording in a month. I hate to tie up a scanner for a few months, because I will lose it for it's real purpose, but maybe it will show just how little of a problem it really is.

Ray,

I am a professional truck driver, and a General Licensed Amateur Operator. And at this time, I will say, much of your comments are off base and jerkish (if that is a word).

1) There are many more illegal radios out there and in operation, that are NOT in trucks, then you tend to believe.

2) I know several HAMS, and some of them have been in ham radio longer than you my friend, that do own and/or operate the 10m export radios for various reasons.

3) I happen to enjoy experimenting, and the only Amateur band radio I own is a old Yaesu FT-470, the rest of them in the 6, 10 and 12 meter bands are heavily modified former CB Radios. And they will cover, the entire voice portion of those bands, even being the are channelized. It only takes some research and cleverness to make them work.

4) I also own and operated several legal CB radios!

5) In my area, we have a large group of truck drivers, that are licensed amateur radio operators, and even have their own coordinated repeater system in the 2m band, as well as use of 10m and 11m, all on legal radios for their prespective bands.

6) You seem to forget, albeit all your equipment is commercially purchased, more than likely, that a strong drawing point of being licensed, is it allows experimentation, modification and construction of ones own radio equipment. I personally, really enjoy that ability, and have a couple projects in the works, doing things with former CB radios, that you could not even get past the VCO conversion on!

No with all that said, yes, unlicensed operators, using converted 10m radios, can be a pain in the arse! But your approach will not stop the problem, nor will it encourage anyone to become properly licensed. I guess on advantage to those that choose to run a converted export radio, is that they are afraid to take it off of channel 19, in fear that they cannot put it back.

You at times have excellent points, but you tend more to being an Ass, then a properly spoken communicator! I tend to be highly offended at your general outlook on truck drivers in general! It would not surprise me if you were not a member of CRASH, PATT or MADD. You comments lead me to believe you are in that boneheaded liberal class of moron.

Sorry, the truth can hurt.

Have a nice day!

It's time to give it a rest permenantly!!!!!!

Ray give the TYRADE a rest. Worry about your own radio operating. This way your blood pressure won't go into OVERLOAD!!!

Try to have a good New Year!!!
