I just realized why RR is so d&mned funny. Good old Barney Fife. I don't know if it's a gag or if he really takes himself that seriously. Either way, it's a hoot! Keep it up RR! ROTFLMAO!!!

$1.50 37 years ago. And I thought back then, "Harumph! Ain't no way I would pay $2.00 for gas! HA!

RR
never did like the 172, underpowered. It is a nice 2 PERSON airplane, I guess. I have 400 or so hours in my grandpa's 182 and 206. I am the recent new owner of a Van's Aircraft RV-6. Little bitty 2 seater with an IO-360. Only over powered plane I've ever flown. I bought it from the guy that built the kit and it is awesome, Ray. 212 mph at 100% power, 160-170 mph cruise at 60% and 6 gallons per hour certified for car gas. Not bad for a fixed gear airplane!!! Kinda squirly in a crosswind, though.
I always enjoyed the 172! Easy, forgiving airplane. A guy crashed a 150 near here last Friday. Trying to stretch his fuel & make the airport. It's the way so many pilots meet their end. This one walked away, but (I'm told) he's in a LOT of trouble, not the least of which (not forgetting the fuel thing), trying to tiptoe under a nearby TCA. I don't 'spect he'll be "tiptoe-ing anywhere with an airplane anytime soon!

In my flying days, I got a lot of stick time in a J-3. I LIVED at the airport in those days, and it was rare to find me NOT in the air almost every day.
We flew the little Piper all over the place (and into some places we weren't supposed to  )----like a few cow pastures. Let it quit due to carb ice once and dead sticked into a field beside an interstate. It's what we got for birddogging a couple of girls in a red convertible up the superslab, and not paying attention to carb heat once in awhile. They'd wave, and we'd wave back, and waggle our wings at 'em. My old instructor got wind of the fact that we not only landed beside the highway, but we let the ice melt and flew the airplane back OUT conveniently foregoing the FAR's and the ensuing paperwork we didn't want to do. We were a couple of 20-ish kids, a bit cavalier about dotting every "I". Old Luke, one of those old guys that smoked a pipe and learned how to fly in the '40's in a Waco, says, "I just got a call here at the airport (when we got back and landed) that somebody in a little yellow J-3 landed in a pasture...............................I better not find out you boys were involved!"

'who, US? NAAAAAAW!" We played as innocent as could be. 'Course, you could get away with a LOT more than now! That was 37 years ago. And gas was about .50/gallon & around 29.9 at the local discount gas station. Dual instruction in a 150 was..............(i'm thinking)................about $12/hr.

Sweet! Did we just hijack the thread and start hangar flying? Oops.

I think that most any Cessna is a very, very forgiving airplane. The 172 is very easy to fly. I got my time and solo'd in the 206 and had decided that all airplanes flew like the 206. Not so. In landing the 206, drop some flaps, throttle back, keep the nose up and she's gonna grease in pretty smooth. The 172 gets a little stupid when you try that. Grandpa said "just drive the damn thing back on to the runway" and I found that worked soooo well. Even with the 182, if I were to try to land it like the 172, I think it'd be liable to bend the firewall a little.

Flew out of Albuquerque, NM in the 182 with 4 people one day. Density altitude was something like 10,700 feet. Well, she got in the air, somewhat. Control told me I needed to turn out, was going the wrong way. My response was "No, I'm not!!!"

Not to cause bad feelings, or cause a riff in the force against RR! But! If I remember correctly from my last research, 26 of 48 states adopted rules allowed by the FCC, to regulate not only Citizen Band, but other forms of mobile communication. Texas is, one of those states!

Word of warning!!

Heard from a good source, but have not been able to verify 100%, if you are travelling I-35 south bound, out of San Antonio. The North Bound scale is currently out of the ground. Make sure your Connex, Magnums and whatever brand of Export radio and Linear Amplifiers are not visible!

Why you may ask?

One, it will que a full level one inspection and search of the truck!

Two, if you have already been tagged for an inspection, and the Texas DOT officer inspecting your vehicle sees the illegal radios, You will be fines under Texas Law, and your equipment will be confiscated until the court date.

3 out of the 5 Troopers that are assigned to the South bound scale, are licensed HAM operators, and very savvy in the regulations, both FCC and under Texas Law.

Part of the reason for high Radio Enforcement at that scale, is the increase in Mexican Truck traffic, to and from Laredoz! Mexican drivers, are not citizens of this country, thus, have NO Legal right to operate a CB or any other unlicensed equipment in this country.

Again, I have not verified this, as my loads are normally overwieght and permitted for non-interstate, so crossing that scale for me never happens. But again, my peaceful Midland 77-250 sitting on the dash, will not raise an eyebrow. Unless I accidentally key it up while crossing the scale pad. They say it has a tendency to mess up the computer!

SHHHHHHH! Don't tell 'em that! We WANT 'em to get caught.  There's a lot of people who are urging FCC to do a full-fledged BAN on "10 Meter" radios. I was told they ARE considering it since it IS a do-able, legal way to go after the people who are transmitting outside CB.
I certainly support these efforts! It just boils down to one simple fact: CBers have 40 distinct "channels" on which to play. They are to use an FCC-certified, 40 channel, 4 watt radio for the purpose. There NO need to go off those frequencies as they stay unused most of the time. People tend to flock to 19 where the drivers are OR where there is a group. Other users have done what is required of them for the privilege of using certain segments of bandwidth, and they, such as the hams, are entitled to use those resources without impediment from unlicensed bandits.
I hope they DO get a BAN in place!

Get real RR the FCC isn't going to ban "10 meter" radios. First place there are a bunch of "hams" that use these radios. Just look at all the hundreds of "Tech" class licenses there are. And if they banned "10 meter" radios they would also have to ban "12 meter" and "15 meter" radios also. Since both of these radios can also be easy to convert.

I suspect whoever told you has a bad case of wishful dreaming. Because they sure didn't think this through.

I believe I said IN COMMERCIAL TRUCKS! This IS a DO-ABLE thing since commercial trucks must comply with all regulations as to equipment and any illegal activity that may go on in and around said vehicle. The so-called "10 Meter" radios ARE 1) ILLEGAL to SELL, and 2) Being USED to violate Part 95 AND Part 97 because a: they are illegal to USE on CB, AND they are being used to TRANSMIT ON the 10 Meter band without license. Ninety percent of the illegal stations that I hear on 10 Meters ARE truckers. Thus, this is a way to HIT them at the source. It's not like they have to pass an additional law or regulation; the regulations are ALREADY in PLACE! All they gotta do is USE these existing regulations to get the illegal equipment removed from commercial trucks. It has, BTW, already been hinted at by Mr. Hollingsworth. I said nothing about banning ALL 10 Meter radios; just those installed in commercial vehicles! Ban them unless one has the proper license. 2) Fix it so the local DOT can get a piece of the pie. It CAN (and I, for one, HOPE they do) be done. And don't think for a minute there aren't people in touch with Mr H trying to get this done.

Can't we all just get along........................?

Come and listen in to a radio station,
Where the mighty host of Heaven sing,
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on),
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on),
If you want to want to hear the songs of Zion,
Coming from the land of endless spring,
Get in touch with God (get in touch with God)
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on).

Chorus
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
And listen to the music in the air,
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
And glory to share (glory share)
Turn the lights down low (lights down low)
And listen to the Master's Radio,
Get in touch with God (get in touch with God)
Turn your radio on.
Brother, listen in to the gloryland chorus,
Listen to the glad hosannahs roll,
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
Get a little taste of joys awaiting,
Get a little Heaven in your soul,
Get in touch with God (get in touch with God)
Turn your radio on.

Listen to the songs of the fathers and the mothers,
And the many friends gone on before,
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on),
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on),
Some eternal morning we shall meet them,
Over on the Hallelujah Shore,
Get in touch with God (get in touch with God),
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on).

Amen!!! Brother Truckers

Maybe you should look at your post on Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:09 pm. Notice and I quote:
There's a lot of people who are urging FCC to do a full-fledged BAN on "10 Meter" radios. I was told they ARE considering it since it IS a do-able, legal way to go after the people who are transmitting outside CB.

OK RR think of this way. You have been a licensed "ham" for over 40 years. You are in your 18 wheeler and get pulled over by good old Barney Fife. He sees what he thinks is a illegal 10 meter radio and wants to see your license. You tell him you don't have it on you. Mind you you know you don't have it so you have not been use your transceiver.

So good old Barney Fife takes your radio and gives you a nice $500 fine for having an illegal "10 meter radio." What are you going to do Mr. RR?

What is wrong with this picture? 1) Good old Barney Fife in most cases has no clue what is and what is not an illegal radio. 2) You did nothing illegal. Now you have to go through the hassle of getting your radio back and fighting the ticket. It is one thing if you are tooling around in your own city or town. It is a totally different thing when you drive all over the country.

I'm sure there are guys like you trying to get such an action. Not really knowing the total effect on such a stupid action. Let's face it illegal "10 meter" radio is NOT a major problem. Now maybe you live down the road from a terminal where a few truckers have these illegal radios. So you might be able to hear these radios. But it is more likely (going from your past post) you simply don't like the illegal operation. And HOPE the FCC will do something.

I'm not in favor of any law that can affect a license "ham." I lived through the Kansas City law when law enforcement was given the right to take "what they thought" was illegal police scanners. We had several in the club lose their radio because of this stupid law. There were a couple that never got their radios back. And let's face it the Kansas City law made a whole lot more sense than what you want.

My own opinion is (and that is ALL it is regarding the illegal radios in trucks) WHAT does a licensed amateur WANT with one of the stupid things to START with? They aren't really "amateur" radios at all, but
glorified CB sets. They LOOK like a CB, they beep and squeak like a CB, they have "channels", thus lack flexibility for the amateur who wants to get ALL he can out of his radio experience. Many serious hams wouldn't be caught DEAD with one of the things in their vehicles (or house).

As to "not having one's license ON him", would a truck driver set off driving without his drivers license? His logbook? His waybills? It is part of the job AND if one wants to engage in amateur radio, he should have his license ON him anyway. I'm never without mine.

No matter what is done about the invasion of unlicensed people on amateur and other frequencies, somebody will probably be inconvenienced in some way.

There are CBers on some other boards inquring about the use of 15 Meters and what those "channels" were for. Chances are their equipment won't cover that much space.........................yet. However, it is not unreasonable to believe that these outlaws will plop their keisters down on that band eventually. The "export" builders would be most happy to oblige such a market. So WHERE is it to END? Just sit there and moan about these thieving b*****ds and do NOTHING? OR take action to eliminate the source of the majority of illegal activities? It IS a FACT that most these illegal transmissions come from commercial trucks. The way to stop it is to go right to the source: Ban the illegal "export" radios in commercial trucks.

Sure, it would, perhaps, inconvenience a few as no solution is perfect.

BTW, there is a long thread about the "chicken banders" on 10 Meters over on QRZ.
