NO! You must have 8 hours in the sleeper to extend (or as some say stop the clock, however so you know the clock doesn't stop, it keeps ticking so learn the phrase it extends the clock).

So, if I go on duty at 5 AM and am on lines 3 &4 (with 1 off duty period of 1hr) until 2:45PM and then go to SB for 3hrs, do I still have to shut down at 7PM or can I go until 10PM now?

YES! You should still shut down @ 7:00 pm. If you do not want to split break then you can NOT drive passed that 14th hour. Now if you want to split break and you get 8 HOURS IN THE SLEEPER you can "EXTEND" your 14 hour clock by 8 hour (or however many hours you have in the "SLEEPER").

So if you started @ 5:00 am and drove 3 hours and then took 8 hours in the sleeper your 14 hour would now end 3:00 am the following day. The driving time from 5:00 am to 3:00 am should not total more than 11 hours of line 3 time (driving).

That was just a quick easy explination

That's incredible!!! On my safestat, I have NO out of service inspections in the last 30 months with 3 trucks. I probably have to show my logbook once or twice a month. Same for my other 2 drivers. I've shown it as high as 6 times in one day in Texas a couple of years ago. Sheesh.

Three times. I forgot, In VA about 4 months ago. 200 pounds over on the tandems, and he checked my logbook while writing an overweight fine.
Sheesh, 6 times?? I think I'd throw it out the window and say I don't have one. Does your truck say "Whatever you do, don't ask to see my logs" on the side of it??

I wouldn't suggest doing that. I recently saw somewhere that they had alleviated the problem financially. It said there was a $1500.00 fine for failing to "have a logbook". Far less expensive to grovel a little over a minor infraction. When I get a chance...I'll see if I can find that source.

I'd like to see that. There was a time when, if your logbook wasn't accurate, you wouldn't show the officer anything, because the fine was only $25 for not having a logbook.

I don't think any state has a fine for $25 anymore. Per the fee schedule for Midland county court in Texas it is a $208 fine plus court cost. See: http://www.co.midland.tx.us/jp/pct2a.../web_fines.pdf
