Recently the company I work for had DOT come out and test the drivers on doing a full truck inspection. The Whole works. No problem, I have an 11 page sheet I keep in the truck that lists all items that must be inspected but was told that DOT would not allow this in an official inspection. Anybody know of a regulation that says not written aids in passing an inspection.
I got about 95% of the items that needed inspected but could have did better with a cheat sheet.

He's asking why he can't use a cheat sheet when DOT says one can't be used for an official assessment of his driver qualifications, as in passing a pre-trip inspection from memory.
Maybe it has something to do with the company passing an official DOT Inspection and being allowed to continue operating. BOL

It depends on the state, and it will be written into state policies. During any type of skills test, in many states, it is strictly up to the examiner if s/he will allow any type of aid, check list, etc.

Call me crazy but what the heck are you guys talking about? The only time I had to "proove" my pretrip knowledge was to pass the test. If that's what you're talking about then I don't know of any state that allows a cheat sheet. Other than that, unless you let your CDL expire you don't have to pass any more knowledge tests (okay- Hazmat- but I don't have hazmat).
If it's a special deal your company requires then you'd better ask them, not us.

I got about 95% of the items that needed inspected but could have did better with a cheat sheet. If you got a 95% I would say you did just fine. I doubt if very many could do that goods. I know I couldn't. The only time I know you have to show you can do a inspection is when you are being tested for your CDL. I'd wonder why the company requested a DOT inspection. Could it be because your company is having a problem with a large number of citations? kc0iv
