Steve,
For what it's worth, I was speaking with a friend of mine that has been a diesel mech for the past 7 years and I described your problem word for word. His first thought was bad fuel/clogged filters. He said the first thing he would do is put some fuel additives and change the filters. Also mentioned that if it was bad fuel, the filters may need to be changed 2 or 3 times after adding fuel additives before the problem would go away. Just thought I would share/echo what everyone else has been suggesting. |
OK, thanks for all the suggestions. I plan to bob tail up to the dealer and change the fuel filter on the spot then take it for a ride. If that's not the problem then I'll head back to the shop and let them fix it.

Just got my truck back from the shop. Tons of water in the tank and all the filters. They said once you get water in the tank and it gets into the filters you can pretty much fill the tanks with pure alcohol and it won't help.
The truck was like a race car on the way home!!! |
You are correct about changing the filters if there is much water in the system. I have drains on one of my fuel filters. I can drain some of the water off that way. The alcohol will get rid of any excess water still in the system. I usually keep a spare fuel filter with me in case of an emergency. If it gets to the point of missing a lot, you will probably need to replace the filter, too. I am glad that it was only a fuel filter. That saved you a lot of money. From your description, I felt that was probably what was causing your missing. I always look for the least expensive solution first. 8)
