If you think that's bad, check out Volvo injectors. $925 each! Good thing they last a long time.

Steve, I know this sounds stupid but idle your truck and just barely touch the exhaust manifold, you don't want it too hot. Usually you can pinpoint which injector is misfiring.

Also about the shocks, it's absolutely correct. Also don't forget, the only tires that are ever balanced are your steers. The rest are always out of balance, some more then others.

Allan,

can you expand on this more???

Be good, Jim

Drive tires are never balanced, because it's impossible to balance them. You need the drum balanced with the tire, and I don't know of a way to do that on the drives. With steer tires it's easy, and makes the most sense.

Maybe you could balance trailer tires, but I've never seen it done.

It just doesn't matter as much, because there's so many tires out there to "fight" the out of balance condition. Steer tires are much more precise.

Holy crap, $400 for one injector!!!

I pulled over for 10 minutes today and shut the engine off. When I started out again the problem was gone? I think it's back again but not sure.

I only did 480 miles today and it was tough. Up one hill downshifting with everyone else and crawling up the hills then down the other side laying on the brakes the whole way. Very heavy traffic going though TN and VA.

I swear, not a single person in Tennessee or Virginia lives on flat land unless they are at the bottom of a hill living in an 8ft travel trailer!!! GMAN?

This driving really takes it's toll on me. Not like out west or Texas where you can sit back with the cruise on, listen to music and drive for hours and hours without seeing anybody. Give me the boonies any day!!

Steve, I would check to see if you might have some water in your fuel. Someone suggested changing your fuel filter. That is much cheaper than replacing an injector. You can get some alcohol and put it in the tanks or there is also treatment you can buy for more money. If that doesn't do the trick, then it may be an injector. I replaced one about 3 years ago. It cost $366 for the injector plus labor. I believe it wound up costing me about $800 or so. If you take it to a dealer, they can put it on their computer and tell you if it is an injector and which one is having a problem. If it is an injector, I wouldn't replace all of them. I know some who swear that is the way to go, but I have put about 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles on the truck since that time and haven't had a problem with any of the other injectors. I would do the fuel filter first. If you get some bad fuel or water in the fuel, it can act just like a bad injector. Even with labor and filters, you will likely spend less than $100 for labor, filter and alcohol or chemicals to clear up the water. You can do that at any truck stop or garage.

I actually got some bad fuel a couple of months ago. I would have sworn that I had a bad injector. Fortunately, I decided to take a chance that it could be water in the fuel. I keep extra filters in the truck since I use CAT filters. That and some rubbing alcohol solved the problem. I got the higher octane alcohol at Dollar General Store for about $2/bottle. It sure beats paying another $800 for an injector. The way you describe the problem, I would check the fuel first.

By the way, I live on flat land. We have a few of them in Tennessee.

Steve I had an injector go bad 2 months ago, and did not know what it was then, and my fuel filter was clogged 1 month ago and didn't know what it was either then.

I have a older engine 350 BCC engine, and there was alot of difference between the injector going bad (I was under a load when it went out, and man that thing would not get up to speed at all fast, but the main difference was between the two of them was when the injector went out, it had a skip to it.

Kinda like a car when you foul a plug, or a plug wire is bad, but when the fuel filter went bad, it did not skip. It took it longer to get wound out, and up a hill it was really noticeable.

When I took it in to the shop for the injector the mechanic came out with a Thermometer (not sure of the spelling) walking around checking the temp on my block.

I asked him what he was doing and he replied "See the difference in the temp and I said yes, he said that a bad injector would not be firing right, therefore the temp would be cooler than the other injectors that were firing right.

That's one thing I forgot, thanks for mentioning it GMAN, is the injector test.

All they do is hook your truck up to a computer, and the computer logs the RPMS that the truck is running at. Then each injector gets shut off one at a time. If the RPMS drop say 100 rpms for injectors 1-5, yet only 80 RPMS for injector 6, then injector 6 is weak.

It's not 100%, but it sure does help!

I had it done about a year ago, and everything was fine. Not bad for almost a million miles!

Dejanh 03-18-2007 01:17 PM

How do you trat your fuel with that dollar store alcohol, how much of it do you put in and so forth. I have dollar general about 2 miles from my house and will go there tomorow to buy some..

Maybe you guys are right. I seem to think this stared happening after I had my truck washed. I will try changing the filter and I'll see if this place I'm in has something to put in the tank now before I leave. I could go next door to Denny's and buy a case of beer but I'm not sure how much alcohol would be needed. :D

It's 10pm and I just got up after going to bed at 3. If I keep this up my schedule is going to wrap around the clock and I'll become normal like everyone else. I'm going to need a nap today but chances are there won't be any place to park for one until 7am or so. This is one of the problems with driving at night.

Starting to get cold out and a little snow here and there. I understand we got 18 inches at home but from the looks of the weather report it's going to be warm and rain the next few days so not looking forward too a muddy parking lot.

I may try to change the shocks myself. The look pretty easy to get to but not sure if car mechanic tools will be enough to get the bolts off. I may take it to the garage up the street that works on cars. They seem like the type that would tackle anything.

You are welcome, allan. That is the way that the CAT dealer in Denver found out which injector was bad on my truck. It only took a few minutes. After they replaced the injector they checked it again with the computer and everything was working the way it was supposed to work.
