Malaki86 great thred. How did you make out on your taxes?
I am once again suffering from signs of O/O-itus. I was leased to Landstar prior to deploying to Iraq in' 05. Out of the industry for 9 yrs and driving a company truck for Britton flatbed div. for the past year. Looking at options. Older truck (cash)? or newer under L/P?

Thank you for sharing your story!
I am actually looking to get into the business with a good friend of mine who has had his authority for almost a year now. He's only had a box truck and two cargo vans and was looking to add his first semi next month. I was initially going to buy a box truck as well, but opted to go a pay-as-you-go lease option through Penske and get in before he gets his truck and takes all the initial loads, lol. Hoping to finalize everything today.
It's EXTREMELY similar to what you have described, however being that I can walk away at anytime, it requires a $7,500 DEPOSIT, which is refundable at anytime. The plan is to try it for 30 days and then re-evaluate from there. From my projections based on what my buddy has done with just his box truck, we could stand to make $2.75/mile with the contacts that he has made in the year. He currently runs the box truck at $2.20-2.35/mile and has freight moving daily with a driver. We plan to pay our first driver .45/mile plus flat $50-100 bonus on a return load so he could stand to make roughly $.68/mile on a run. With the combination of his current contacts and the various load boards available, I hope to have enough freight to move M-F...
Only time will tell!

2.75/mile?? Ok if you say so.

And why is it only two those options? Why you are not considering a financing on a new truck? Or glider? Or newer low mileage used?

And what is your expected gross per week, month? $2.75 a mile is not a bad number, but you are still need some miles to run, cause it won't do you any good, if you are only running couple hundred miles a day. Is it for all actual miles, or just "book" loaded?

I most certainly will. We're waiting to hear back on a contract now to either Atlanta or Chicago for $2.75/mile right now. He's done a couple of runs in his box truck for $2.85 with this company.
Even on loadboards I've seen some that post their actual rates $2.70-$2.85. Mileage can range from 600-1200. Granted, the average can be $1.80-2.45/mile, still it's possible to get more.

Worst case scenario even at $1.75/mile, after all expenses (except taxes, which will put aside 25%):
Day $562
5 Days/week $2,810
Month $12,176
Year $146,120
In my eyes, if I make even half of that from one truck, I'm perfectly content. This is based off of 500mi/day. My first driver is wanting to be gone 6 days, home 1.
