This version says 8th grade education and other versions say high school graduation. Either way it's meaningless to todays education standards. I bet there are plenty of high school tests that you took that you'd fail at today. The reason being that at the time you would have studied for those tests but have lost much of the knowledge you had then. History tests with dates and names were only remembered for a test and quickly forgotten. Who in this day cares how many bushels fit in a wagon? Many things that were important in 1895 are not now considered to be important. How many students in 1895 would have done well on a test of computer programming?

Check out the Snopes.com site and one will realize why this test is only of interest to the pundits that think todays education is sub standard.

I wasn't going to say anything, now I don't have to

Everybody longs for the good old days and always remembers them as being much better than what they really were.

The data shows what it shows. It shows that the populace as a whole is more educated today than it was 50 years ago. It shows that those finishing any given level of education are more educated than someone finishing the same level 50 years ago. It shows that we are behind much of the industrialized world, primarily in math and science, and many of those countries are "socialist" countries. I'm certainly not advocating socialism...simply stating what the data shows
