The APU gets it's fuel from my main tanks. I was 5.1 all the other quarters before I got the APU.

How would you guys go about figuring out the amounts?
Also near as I can tell after a couple of random fill up tests,...I am getting 7.2 to 8.5mpg.
Random by meaning,...I fill up and then drive the day and then fill up to the same amount (I use a stick because my gauge is way off as well) at the end of the day. I have done this on two of the loads so far and it seems to be consistant depending on the terrain.
You can use your GPS if you have one. Mine tells me how many miles I travel each day then I can reset it to zero.

You can also use Microsoft Streets and Maps to recreate your trip from your log books. If it takes another path just grab the route with the mouse and drag it to the roads you did take.

Your not stealing my thread. I just like to ramble on in one place now.

IFTA uses the same mileage charts DOT officers use, when it comes to hiway use mileage. The odometer of each truck is different, and no 2 trucks are going to have exactly the same mileage, even though one followed the other on a route, using exactly the same turns.

Someone using Microsoft Streets & Trips, Promiles, or MapQuest is not going to get into trouble, unless they under-report truck practical mileage.

According to what I have been told by my state IFTA people, you can use mileage off the Rand McNally, mileage readings as you cross the state line or a mileage program as long as it is consistent. In other words, if you use Rand McNally then you should use that for the entire quarter for all miles. If you use actual odometer readings (preferred by them) for each state line, then you should use it throughout the quarter for accurate reporting. The key word is consistency.

I have a note pad on the dash each time I cross a profinancial line I book down the mileage, so every mile is logged in every province, that gives you miles, fuel bill, gives you the fuel. There you go, got both at the end. I have total miles, total fuel for the quarter, do the math and you have your mpg. hey rev what do you do???????? except poke Steve with a stick to see if he squeals LETS SEE WHAT YOU DO??. How dare you even mention that. There is NO such thing as dead head miles when it comes to my honey!!! lol

Yup, I know bullhauler, if I was smart I would do the same as you and save myself hours of aggravation. After a few weeks I tend to forget what a pain it is to do.

Pretty much the same thing, except I also write down mileage when I arrive at a shipper or receiver, as that is how it should be broken up on the IFTA report (state line to shipper or receiver in any state you travel in, shipper or receiver to state line, or shipper to receiver within the same state; not state line to state line, unless you are just travelling through the state)

Example: If I deadhead from Green Bay, WI to Madison, WI, load a shipment, fuel in Rockford, IL, and deliver to St. Louis, MO, my IFTA report for the day will look like this:

STATE/.....HWYS USED..../....TOTAL MILES..../....GALS PURCHASED..../....NAME OF STATION.... /STATE
WI.........41,26,151,94,151...145
WI.........151,39................... 55
IL...........39,55......................304....... .......................155.65 gallons................FLYING J...........IL
MO........55,64......................12

Doing it like this leaves no room for dispute or error, as everything is easily cross referenced with fuel receipts and logs. It's certainly more accurate than doing it Steve's way, and somehow I highly doubt his one-time odometer reading matches up with what he comes up with for actual mileage at the end of the quarter, so he ends up throwing a few miles in here or there, making the entire thing completely inaccurate. He then comes to a trucking message board boasting about getting 5.8 mpg, which is supposedly the highest he's ever gotten, even though a year ago he boasted 6 mpg.

except poke Steve with a stick to see if he squeals LETS SEE WHAT YOU DO??. BE HELPFUL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR SMALL PATHICE LIFE

I guess this is one of those "To each his/her own" issues.

I log my mileage each trip I start, mileage when I load, as well as the city where I load, each state line I cross, which city I break in, midnight mileage if I am driving at night, fuel mileage each fuel stop as well as the city/state, plus I record my mileage on each fuel receipt, and I record my unload destination city and mileage, and the mileage and city when I drop the dirty trailer. I also record mileage for travel to repair & service shops.

I do all that not for IFTA, since IFTA is down by the company I lease to. I do it to keep track of unpaid loaded miles (HHG miles versus practical miles) and all deadhead miles, for tax purposes. I also keep all my logbook copies..for the same reason.

Yes..a pain in the tush..but a pain I choose to endure.
