Wednesday morning I drove with a different instructor. He is an old trucker originally from Oklahoma, meaning he doesn't say much about himself and I wonder if he even likes me. I don't know if he drove 30 years or 40+ years(Depends who you ask). He is a great trainer thou. He didn't want me shifting so much, to keep it in the highest gear(low rpm; better fuel mileage) that the truck would pull. Also, I need to slow down my left and right turns; just let it crawl around the turn and once straighten out "gas on it"(his words). He was harder on me than the last instructor, but I learned more and I like his style of driving(eg. save fuel, take time turning, less shifting).
We didn't go into Spokane today as I thought we would. But, it was okay because I still worked on turning and I got better gearshift training. My route was the following:

At lunchtime I watched the video "A Mistress Called the Road" (
http://www.qcontinuum.com/~keard/misroad.html). She has waited a long time for me to return to her.
I was on the range(eg. backing) from 4-6pm. I was not too happy with myself for the first hour, but things started clicking in towards the end. I was having troubles with the 45 degree back, but when I switched to the 90 degree back(Generally a harder backing maneuver) I did it right the first time. I have 4 hours on the range Thursday afternoon. I will work on the 45 degree until I get it right. Plus, I will start on parallel parking, and forward/reverse serpentine. I think I will do just fine, now.
When I was going back to the hotel after school, my pickup felt funny. The clutch pushed in easier and it steered faster. All that driving slow around the range and pushing in that big clutch(I need to work on that left leg muscle) has changed my perception on driving. I know from my past that after weeks of driving a big truck, that driving a vehicle low to the ground is a strange sensation. I just didn't think it would kick in so fast. =-O :-D
I have homework tonight that is a 57 question test. The ONLY way to past the test is to open up the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations(FMCSR; aka Trucker's Bible) book and find the answer. For everyone else this is midterm test and the instructor is correcting their papers today. For me, because I was on the range and because I am NOT required to take this test(refresher course student), my instructor will let me correct my own test tomorrow morning.
DD - When will you be thru CDA on your new load? Give me a phone call when you get close. If it is Friday morning I may be on my mountain drive up 4th of July/Lookout Passes. In that case, I will have to be on the watch for you.
Your last load was a brutal run; Hope for you that this will be much easier.
BTW, on Saturday in CDA they are renaming the airport to Pappy Boyington Field, as this WWII USMC fighter pilot and Medal of Honor winner was born here. I am helping the Marine Corps League at the ceremony. They are going to have 2 USMC Harriers jets from his squadron VMA-214 there for the dedication.
