K...thks Steve, but I do have one (permanant address), my godparent's home in California
Everything I have is off of there, my CDL and all, hoping they can fax me everything I need if possible (mail from my godparent's house to me), but if not Ill eat the other 500 the feul will run. Yeah I will call one of these companies that say they will do the whole process, found like 6-7 brochers in the truck stops.

It can take up to 6 weeks for you to get your authority. In addition, you will need to pay your 2290 before you will be allowed to get your base plate and permits. Most states require that you have a telephone number listed in the name of your company and prove state of residency before you can get your base plates and permits. The residency issue can include mortgage, tax or utility bills, drivers license, etc., Getting your authority and legal takes time. You can't just file the paperwork and start hauling freight. Once you have your MC number you will also need a DOT number. There is no cost for the DOT number, but you must have your MC number before you can get anything else. You can't even get your base plates or permits before you have a MC number. You are probably looking at from 2-3 months minimum, before you can get everything filed and start getting any money coming in. You see, no broker or shipper will allow you to book a load without proof of MC authority and insurance coverage.

One way to do it, would be to lease on to someone right now. They will get you everything within a couple of days. Run for them while you take care of your own authority paperwork. When it's all done you can do it alone. Just an idea. Don't know if that is an option for you though. Good luck either way.

Hey Steve - you mentioned earlier that you had your insurance prior to buying your truck. How did you do that - because I have called for quotes and they ask for a description of the truck and trailer, assuming I already own the equipment. Did you already have a make and model in mind that you went shopping for specifically.

Any truck your seriously thinking about buying, the dealer will give you a copy of the title, and any info for insurance reasons. If you do decide it is something you would like to buy, insurance can then be put on that truck before you pick it up. Regardless if you buy it or not.

Hmmm since there is a little bit of curiosity on insurance, let me explain how I got mine, which I had even less to go on. I had negotiated with an insurance broker before about what I wanted, enough cargo insurance to haul for brokers, and what year truck I wanted to buy, and possible make (the big concern seems to be your CDL# and history), she estimated a policy right there and said call me when you have the truck.
As some may know I bought my truck from auction, so I was clueless what I would have beforehand....didnt matter, I just faxed her over all my Info., with a check for payment, and she faxed back to the auctioners the front cover of my insurance policy within 4-5 hours. Start with the Info as soon as you can (early in the day) when you buy the truck, cause there will be a little delay once your insurance broker has the Info. for her to adjust the policy should there be any changes on your part and to finish the details. |
