if its minor I keep going but alert the police, if its major i`ll stop, too many lawsuits these days for me to stop for every wreck unless it looks like someones in real bad shape.


i`ll also stop for stranded people since I haul in the middle of nowhere most the time.

Sometimes when conditions aren't good it makes things worse to stop. I usually keep on going but contact troopers and let others know on the CB where the accident is and to be careful. Drive safe everyone.

Flipped cars are one thing, and so are minor fender-benders or "spin-outs"

This was a head on collision with a walmart truck. the front end of the car was totally GONE!! Yes there had to be injuries.

Stopping is really dependant on a lot of factor's.

What is traffic / area population like? If your on I-10 in Houston Metro area, don't stop. Avoid being involved in the accident itself, and use the cell to notify emergency assitance orginizations.

If you are on US287 south of Lyman CO..... stop beyond the accident itself, walk back to the scene to see if you can assist.

If you are carrying HAZ-MAT load..... you are rquired to continue on your journey. It is safer to pass it by, than to provide opportunity for something worse to happen.


Worst accident I have ever seen?

SB I-5 in Seattle, in a construction zone where there was no shoulder, car broke down mid-way thrpugh in the right lane....as I approached the car, I saw that it was stopped...so I moved from the right center lane, across to the far left lane...as I was set to pass the disabled car, the driver's door opens, a man climbs out of the car, he and the door were propeled down the roasd and against the jersey barrier by the pickup that hit him at speed. His wife and kids were sitting in the car. I was in a fuel tanker, carrying 11,500 gallons of gasoline..I kept moving, but called 911 on the truck phone. May 2000.

Regretfully I have no choice but to stop. I am a volunteer EMT and by Texas state laws I have to. But most states have a good simariton law to protect people that are trying to help.

If your in a bad spot and unsafe to stop keep going. Stop when you can and call the State Police and let them know you witnessed the accident. They will take your name and number and call you if they need more info. This happened to me once and I had to go to my local police and give them the statement. They in turn faxed it to the police in the other town.

If you stop to help and someone rams into you I would think that is called a preventable accident and you would be partly to blame. Good Samaritan law doesn't apply to that scenario.

I used to be a paramedic in Ohio. I have stopped at many accidents. The first thing you need to determine is if you will cause more of a problem if you stop. What I mean by that is - are you creating an additional traffic hazard that could cause another accident? It is best if you can "secure the scene" at an accident before running right to the vehicles involved to assist. Mark the accident scene with you warning equipment or vehicle. The point here is that you tell other motorists of the hazard in front of them. That is one of the best things that a non medical professional can do. You can then assist injured persons.

One thing to think about if you come upon an accident due to winter conditions. If a car slid off the road due to ice, what would stop another vehicle from hitting the same icy spot and landing in the same spot? Two fire/medic personnel were killed in Ohio several years ago by that scenario. Another car slammed into the car they were focusing their efforts on. This could have been avoided if the scene would have been secured properly. I am not faulting the rescuers, it was not something that happens everyday. Beware of these types of accidents.
