It isn't necessarily a matter of their product being defective.

Case in point: I could put Synthetic oil in my truck right now if I wanted to. Chances are, it wouldn't cause any problems. But if it did, my warranty would be void. And I doubt the manufacturer of the oil will pay for the parts and labor on the engine.

In fact, I go so far as to only use OEM recommended parts and fluids as well. Better to be safe than sorry.

By law, they have to PROVE that the part caused the failure. Sure it gives that fuzzy warm feeling, but is it worth it?

You'll NEVER find "you must use peterbilt parts only" in your warranty. That's against the law.

theres plenty of companies where if you dont use their specified parts you void the warranty, although with paccar thats not the case.

I use baldwin filters for everything, in some cases their cheaper in some cases their not but i`m after quality not saving a couple bucks.

I'm gomnna disagree Allan. Same goes for autos too. If you so much as put a K&N air filter in your new car you better swap it with an oem before taking it in. They'll (manufacturers) will do anything to get out of the warrantyl, ask my buddy with the Mitsu Eclipse that bent a rod under warranty and got screwed by the cold air intake.

Modified or un-approved parts by the manufacturer is their loophole.

K&N`s of ford diesels is a big no no, but in that case I have to side with ford, i`ve seen some of the crap that gets into engines (especially turbocharged) when a K&N has been used.

their kinda like fram filters, everybody thinks their oil filters are great when in reality most of the 2$ ones you can pick up at autozone do a better job.

It also depends on where you get the truck fixed. If you use a local shop and have a good relationship with them, they will honor a warranty regardless if you have slightly off "brand name" parts. If they dont, then you didnt have a good relationship in the first place! And, they arent a reputable shop in my opinion. Now if your out on the road in timbucktoo and throw a rod thru the block and have to use Joes discount truck repair, thats another story.

That only applies to warranties that are not through the manufacturer. In the case of a NEW TRUCK, the manufacturer is paying for the repair, so ultimately, it is their decision, not the dealer's.

Again, education is key here. Aftermarket parts will NOT void your warranty. The manufacturer has to prove that the part contributed to the failure. You cannot just "take their word for it". The problem is most people don't fight for their rights.

Then clearly your friend does not know the laws that protect him very well. He could've easily taken it to court, and won. It was his choice not to do this, but rather take their word for it. His loss, their gain.

I would sooner not go through the hassle. After all, why would anyone want to foot the bill on some high dollar engine item, while the whole thing is tied up in litigation?

And the last I checked, lawyers weren't free either.
