Hello,

Here is where I'm at. I'm graduating with a bachelor's in August. I'll be home for the summer from May-July with nothing to do. I have an internship for the month of July. I graduate in August, and have no concrete plans beyond that.

I don't want to jump straight into my field and would prefer to do something different for a while. I'm intelligent and capable at most everything. I've got a clean driving record, clean police record, and I'm 23. I've never driven a manual or any sort of large truck before.

When I was looking at some of the job websites I saw a bunch of truck companies on there. I don't have the intent to make it a career or even a long term thing, maybe just for a few months. Is it a wise idea?

I wanted to ask before I looked into it any further. Thanks!

No. Its a goofy idea. It will take you up to two months to get through school + orientation. THEN you spend a month to 6 weeks as a trainee in another drivers truck. THEN you spend a year to 2 years solo before anyone considers you a trucker. 3 years after that you're a veteran. during those first 2 phases you make nearly nothing and your life is basically hell. During the second (solo) youre life is Rough, you make a little money, never sleep, eat horribly, never see home. During the third phase.. things are good if you're good.

What youre asking is basically "Hey i thought about going to college for a few months to be a doctor is it a wise idea".

Go get a class b and apply at the local moving companies or something if you want. If you want to be a a trucker and youre planning for anything less than a year or two or your pretty much homeless youre wasting your time.

If you are thinking to opt truck driving as a career then you may face some challenging years. Contractual jobs, low wages, irregular shifts and so on.

Before getting into it, I suggest to get into a proper driving school (trucks). Most of these schools are linked to some good trucking companies and can help you in diving to a good job. Clean driving record and neat police record won't help you much. Its great though and add upto to your resume, but the first thing they ask how long you can drive, your experience and bla bla. You are just 23 and invest 2-3 years to really make it a career rather than just earning few bucks.

People do look for truck drivers who are specialists in modern trucks.

Unless you wish to make this a career, why invest to go to school then out with a trainer just to work at it for a couple of months. I hear the burger joints are hiring, and would cost you less and possibly pay you more for a few months work. If you dont plan to make it a career, dont waste everyones time, not yours.
