It used to be that people claimed that a driver was an "unskilled" worker. That is a fallacy. Drivers are considered skilled. By definition, it's semi-skilled labor. Yeah, I had a link to it at one time on Dept of Labor, think I could find it again...

"college degree" is subjective almost. My ex has a "liberal arts" degree because she couldn't complete the classes needed for an accounting degree. But she's got a degree. I know others who have a BS in some rather technical skills. Some as skilled as an engineer, but because that piece of paper doesn't say "Engineering" on it, pay is no better than a truck driver. If your wife has a state certification/license, those are mostly considered a "professional degree" Like nurse, land surveyor, CPA, lawyer types.

I too am a Road Scholar!

also, I'm a Hooter Inspector, which has been rewarding.
…well, like trucking, you take the good with the bad.

As one who drives the highways of Central Florida Coast to Coast I have to agree, the views are year round...

You are right, licenses I guess would be a "professional degree". I don't know as I'm self-educated. Highest grade I completed was the ninth grade. (I did take college classes when I moved down here as I had a GED, but I never finished. I hate school). Anyway just to clarify my wife has an MBA in International Finance as well as the Series 4,7 & 24 licenses. She is also CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist).

As for the previous post about the guy with masters in finance and being a stock broker, well again, a stock broker is also a sales person as they need a book of business. Sales isn't easy in any field. My wife is a Chief Compliance Officer, some of the brokers do well and some don't. Actually you don't even need a college degree to be a stock broker, just pass a background check and pass the series 7.

Things always need to be broken down. Even a doctor (medical), I mean just saying you're a doctor, well I'm sure a heart surgeon makes way more than a podiatrist. Even a degree, well is it a degree from the local state university or Wharton. Huge difference in price there. My wife graduated from a state university and with no debt. Some in her class had loans. I have a girl that works for me that paid $100,000 for some private school in Upstate New York and she's broke, in debt and soon going to be fired.

Again it all boils down to what you want in life. Also again for some there is no amount of money that would make someone drive a truck and others love it. I was actually talking to a doctor at my daughters gymnastics place, and he was saying that being a doctor wasn't worth it. The money wasn't worth it he said. He told me $250,000 wasn't enough.

I've met a lot of doctors that went into other fields. With managed care the overhead went way up and the income went way down. I know a dentist that gets $90 for a filing. If he does a filling for someone on MediCal he gets $6. Malpractice insurance is a big killer too.

In 1991 or 92 I was sitting and having breakfast with a bunch of truckers out in Ontario 76 truck stop. There were some rather interesting folks there. Mostly accountant, engineer and a lawyer types. Seems they all got burnt out on the professional life and realized that life has slipped past them as they were all now upper 40's early 50's. Most had spent the majority of their life trying to pay off the debt created to get into their "dream job" only to never see it realize.

Expenses were high from the lifestyles of having to wine and dine clients etc and that includes one guy who took up golf for his business because that's where he was seeing his partners make the best deals, on the golf course. Multi-millionaires getting their CPA's to pay for lush country clubs to seal their deal to do their books and manage their funds. Basically catering to a bunch of silver spoons.

the "jist" of the conversation?

"Keep your nose clean, pay on cash, take care of your truck and it will take care of you. By the time you are 50, you can retire from life."

It is dangerous to flash cold hooters at a driver, the bright lights can blind you. Just make sure you wear your shades.

But this topic is aboot high danger in driving, eh, and is it worth it.
There is a lot to being a professional Hooter Inspector, and a mistake can cause a jackknife, or rear end someone, etc.
You can start out like I did, and see if you have what it takes.

You know I had my hip operated on, the physical therapist who is a doctor DPT, is basically the best around in South Florida. She was the team therapist for the Florida Panthers (NHL), head therapist for the Cleveland Clinic down here (which you would swear is a massive hotel) and even when I was going at the time she was rehabbing a Russian who played in the NHL and now the Red Army or something like that for the same problem I had. He actually had his surgery in Colorado where the top surgeon in the country for this problem is (all the pros go to him) and then he flew down here for her to rehab him. Anyway she's one of the best.

Well as I talk a lot and am always asking questions, she said that people like her (with her own building and practice) are like the dinosaurs. She said the insurance companies have cut her rates down to nothing. Really I didn't understand all of it, as I've read a lot of Doctors are getting out of the grips of the insurance companies and doing concierge medicine. I use to talk to the other patients, it seemed like a lot of them were wealthy anyway. And while I was there some pro team in San Diego was sending her someone to evaluate. (I don't know who, she became careful as I figured out who the Russian was )

However, whatever happened to practicing medicine for the desire to help people? Everything is about money. It's like file sharing, I mean for thousands of years they had musicians who played music for the love of music or poetry or whatever. Everything is one big money machine. What happened to doing what you love and you'll never work a day in your life?
