Clerks Strike At L.A. Ports, Cargo Still Moving This is what they want and what they now get.
Stephen L. Berry, a negotiator for the Harbor Employees Association, which represents shippers and terminal operators, said they rejected the latest proposal received from the clerical workers' union late Wednesday, which called for a wage increase of 21 percent over three years. Under the expired contract, the clerical workers had an average salary of $96,900 a year, full medical coverage, at least 21 paid holidays, and 13 sick days and four weeks of vacation per year, he said.

July 7, 2010 (DES PLAINES, Ill.) (WLS) -- Contract talks resumed for striking construction workers in the Chicago area and concluded Wednesday night after seven hours of negotiations. Union employees who work construction on roads, schools and other projects walked off the job last week. Some school districts fear, if the strike continues, construction will not be completed in time for the start of the school year. Negotiations took place in Des Plaines Wednesday evening between the unions and the organization representing employers. Both sides said they were hopeful some progress would be made. Representatives for both the Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 and the Laborers District Council of Chicago met with the Mid-America Regional Bargaining Association for the first time in more than a week Wednesday. Their breakdown in contract negotiations caused thousands of workers to walk off their jobs, shutting down hundreds of construction projects across the city and suburbs. Although talks were wrapped up for the night, both sides agreed to meet again. Initially, the union asked for a for a 15-percent increase in wages in three years and the offer was countered with 3.25 percent. Both sides say they want to work out a new contract that that is fair to all parties. We want to keep the jobs we have, keep the high wages, $53 dollars an hour, $63 an hour, so nobody gets a cut," said Lissa Christman, MARBA spokesperson. They don't work at 0500 in the morning, nor do they work at night. They work during the day....they go out with loaded trailers and return with loaded trailers. There's no time for sleeping for union or non-union city drivers. You have no idea what you're talking about.

I crossed this picket line tonight:
Stepan Co, plant locks out union workers :: Bolingbrook Sun :: Business Sitting in the plant as I type this. Looks like I will be loaded in about 45 minutes less time than was required when the Union was in here. No BS delays whatsoever.

I have seen some sleeping over the steering wheel in their day cabs, as well. I don't think that they were working by the mile. Those who drive day cabs are usually paid by the hour. It is like the union fork lift driver who finds a secluded place to sleep in the warehouse where he won't be found.

The only hourly paid Teamster drivers are city drivers.

When i was active duty in the AIR FORCE i had the unfortunate chance of working with civilian counterparts that were union. Those were the most whining, lazy and everything else that you can think of that makes an enterprise waste money and be extremely uncompetitive. For everything they didn't like they would throw it out with the union threat, waste time and money like nobody's business and be able to cover this up between themselves. All of us that wore the uniform hated them just because for the stuff they were able to get away with.I mean getting fired from a job like that in the government and union was next to impossible.

Clerks Strike At L.A. Ports, Cargo Still Moving This is what they want and what they now get. Striking construction workers, employers resume talks Now I am all for a person making a fair wage but this is getting stupid. I do not blame companies for moving out of the country. I can't believe these people are making almost $100,000/year and still whining about not making enough money. They basically want to be paid $100,000 and not have to do any work. I spoke with a guy at Bosselman's in Gary, IN the other day. He was hot about those construction workers going on strike with the money that they are making. They stopped construction on the roads because they want more money. He thought they were making $30-40/hour. From the article it seems that they are making much more than he thought. |
