Default Try

Try a local company. Not one of the biggies. I worked for a company that hired a lot of "casuals". They pay was crap but they treated them like kings. Not long before i left they hired a driver who hadnt driven in 9 years. The insurance co required a 'training' driver but it got the guys foot in the door.

Just a note though: you hear all this talk about big money.. all these promises. I made 40k my first year. I was in the top 100 drivers for my company and i run HARD. I got home weekends. The years after that about the same but i took it easier the second year and after that i was home 3 days a week. REAL days not trucking days. And remember truckers arent governed under labor law. Its unlikely you'll find any place with a real retirement plan.

But to be honest.. most real truckers dont really see themselves retiring. Theyre adventurers who just cant turn square parts into round ones or hammer nails or sit in an office 9 hours a day. The life IS NOT what you think it is. You are giving up Everything for money including family and friends.

You might consider trying to get a leave of absence for 6 months. That will let you know if you can hack it and if you like it. At the end of the six months either go back home or what the heck if you have the savings buy yourself a 25k truck and hit the road.
