I never knew that docks like that existed.
I went into one of those for the first time in my life this spring. I went inside the drivers room and watched through the window to see just how that worked. Pretty cool.

you know, its funny. I've been into several customers that I took one look at the loading dock and refused to do it. When the customer says "hey, drivers put stretched petes and 53ft trailers in them all of the time I tell them to call those superheros because I can't do it. Period. I know what I can and can't do.

I guess most of the posts I’m reading here are from company drivers. I almost NEVER park (overnight) in a truck stop for anything, ever. They are in business to rip off the driver and I refuse to support that except by buying diesel there. We’ll stay out for 6 – 7 weeks and not park one time in a truck stop except for 30 minutes to an hour to get a shower. I certainly am not afraid to back up, but I am terrified of waking up (or coming out of the truck stop) and seeing the front of my truck rearranged by somebody who does not know how to back into a spot. I don’t know how many times over the years I’ve seen guys hit trucks in a parking lot. I cannot afford the downtime or the insurance claim, so I avoid the situation all together. I don’t even like sitting at docks anymore. Ever since AJAR Logistics out of Ontario hit me while trying to back into a wide open dock in Salinas and then tried to hide it, I’ve been gun-shy of other backing drivers. I prefer to park on the off ramp of a rest area if I have the opportunity. If that is not an option, I’ll park in a mom and pop truck stop. Most steering wheel holders don’t even know those places exist and parking is easier to come by. My last option is to drive until the inverse vampires (those of you who get off the road by dark and won’t resume driving until morning) start leaving the rest areas. There’s also plenty of places left (some states have begun to outlaw it now) where there’s nice wide areas on the exit or on ramps where you can park.

It takes a good driver to know when to put the ego aside.
