Well...it's not 100% essential but it can make life a lot easier on the road. I used PC Miler all of the time. Sometimes, I would use maps online, too. They have satellite images that can be a big help when you are in the middle of nowhere trying to find something (and the address numbers or streets aren't much help). A road atlas is great but only provides so much detail. Plus, when you are stuck waiting for a load or customer, it helps pass the time watching movies, e-mail, surfing, etc.

I use the second hard drive to store anything that is "data" and not a program, operating system related, etc. (pictures, movies, documents, software downloads and updates, e-mail, etc.) If the C: drive or OS ever fails, I can restore the primary drive or OS easily (and not worry about losing anything I want or need). I learned that the hard way a long, long time ago. Never store anything you really want on the OS partition. You could create two partitions on the primary drive but the hard drive itself could still fail, too.

My computer is wired directly to a trailer full of dispatcher brains, but it runs really slow and does a lot of stupid things

I don't know if you've ever dealt with them, but they are great. Fast shipping, great customer service, often great prices. I've bought a ton of electronics from them over the years. Here's the direct link for their notebooks: Laptops, Notebooks, Laptop Computers, Cheap Laptops, Notebook PC at TigerDirect.com

I agree, they are not always the cheapest, but often are, and have about the largest selection of refurbished equipment I've seen on the net. As far as computer parts, they are usually where I get my components. I built a killer desktop last year for under $600, all purchased from Tiger Direct. Some of their “Bare Bones” kits are a great base to start with when building a PC.
