The feds seem determined to put black boxes in every truck on the road. It will do nothing for safety and they still don't know the cost. It will impact the owner operators and small carriers most. It is mainly designed to generate revenue for the government.

Not to de-rail this thread Gman but..

When I forst came to Wylie I was one of the very first put on the electronic logs to try it out. After 2 weeks they told me to go 100% and do away with the paper logs. (There was 6 of us running both till they mae sure that it integrated with the software at the office) I wasn't too sure about it because it logs it exactly as you drive but after just a couple of days I was hooked. It has given me at least an extra half hour every day. It logs to the minute, not 15 minutes. When I pull into a J to fuel we are on receiptless so theres no need to walk inside. On paper you have to log it 15 minutes but on the paperless it logs it exactly to the minute which can be 6 to 10 gaining 5 to 9 more minutes of driving. Thats just one example but there are many more.

If (and/or when) I have to go back to running OTR I will be looking forward to a company that has gone paperless. Yes it does record everything but I like it alot better than the paper thing. While at Big Dog I used DDL and will be using it again but I never drove more than 8 hours a day so logs weren't really an issue and other than one punk DOT officer in Iowa I was never asked for a log book. Most of the time they just wanted to see what was in the trailer and take pictures.

ok...call me dumb, but just what is an OP?

also, i am headed to CA for the first time....not just in a truck, but EVER....and i will be coming in on the 10, taking the 210 around up to Fresno. Any good suggestions to avoid the most traffic? or is anything around LA bad?

Taking the 10 to the 210 up to the 5 is your best bet. You'll likely hit some traffic a few miles before you hit the 5, and possibly on the 210 around San Bernadino. Then it's straight shot up to Fresno on the 99. Have your log up to date, and your BOL handy. You'll be crossing 2 scales, and one inspection point.

My Dad said the same thing about the computer logs, they found that they could drive more in a day than what they were doing with manual logs.

When did the 210 go out to San Bernardino? (not bernadino) Didn't think anyone would catch you on spelling.

SR 210 (Foothill Fwy) goes right to the north side of San Bernardino. It then hooks up with SR 30 or I 215.

i'm always up to date with my log. Dont know how some drivers can be a day or more behind. that is just dumb. And i'll be in a new truck when i enter CA....so bring on the inspections. =)

kevin, are you going to kraft, delivering some paper to some place on jenson, dropping a trailer off at the central freight terminal on central ave, or going to some place that's just south of highway 41? i know fresno quite well since i lived there for 8 years and was also a pizza delivery driver in that city. i know all the nooks and crannies of that city. it's too bad, though, that fresno has a LOT of restricted roads.

whatever you do, if you decide to stay at the truck stop at highway 99 and herndon, make sure that you do NOT park in the back row. if you do, and it's night time, don't even get out of your truck. you'll be propositioned by male hookers. :rofl:
