It is a physical assessment designed to make sure you can actually do the job without dropping dead from a heart attack or wind up on workman's comp due to a back or other injury.

While these work well type physicals vary some from company to company for those that use them you will do things like grip tests, stepping up and down for several minutes and have you pulse checked, lifting various weights of boxes up to different heights, etc.

When I got my CDL in early 2005 I remember students who were going to swift going to take the workwell ,and 2 people failed 1 girl..she was built like a girl...and 1 guy who was built like a petite girl ...they both failed the lifting the box over head thing I think it was 65-85 lbs and in order to do flatbed it was more than van ...nothing special but most petite woman have issues with it ,and very few guys ...I think they should replace the box with a full keg lift from floor 2 overhead ,as this would really help weed out the p u ss ies ...lol

At Swift the workwell is this - unless they changed since June.

They take your blood pressure and pulse - for their baseline and to make sure you are not too high.

You then pick up milk cartons weighing 25, 50 and 75 pounds from the floor to waist level -- 3 times for each weight showing proper lifting techniques.

Those same milk cartons from waist to eye level --- 3 times for each weight showing proper lifting techniques.

Carry a 75 pound milk carton the equivalent of 3 trips of a 53' trailer.

Pull 100 pounds pressure.

Push 100 pounds pressure.

With a step ladder on a platform that is about a foot high your feet flat on the floor step up onto the 2nd step (i think it was the second) - 3 times showing the proper 3 point technique.

They then check your blood pressure and pulse ---- If this is too high you fail.

Yes people fail this test, plan on being sore for a week.

If you want a suggestion, go walk around the block and lift weights up to the date when you leave for orientation.

I beleive swift has added a few things to this test one added item was described like this to me by a current swift driver...after all the lifting tests they have you bend from the waist at 45-90 degree angle and place palms on a sturdy surface infront of you then lock your elbows and hold your breath ...I guess ifyou look behind you or scream you fail .

We had two people not pass. One was a man because of BP. The other was a woman way too short and heavy to make it up into a truck. Don't worry about it too much. Really, it isn't all that much.
