TOMB985, this is a little off topic but, I am currently in the military and I will be getting my CDL here in the next few months. What can you tell me about the military program you were in with Roehl? I tried to contact a Roehl recruiter via email but, they never responded to me, go figure. Any info you could provide I would greatly appreciate. So to hear about the way you are getting screwed over, sounds almost like being in the military all over again only, the military would give you some Motrin and send you back to work, hehehe

The 50 lb "requirement" is not just about lugging freight. It is also there because of the amount of force you may need to bring to bear while hooking and unhooking to the trailer as well as sliding tandems.

Good point uturn, but I'd think the fact that I've been doing this job for almost a year now demonstrates I have no problems with that!

Oh well...we'll see...

 nyynksfn4vr, I'll send you a detailed PM tomorrow...

It could read; "Date"

I, _______________( driver X), am recovering Roehl truck #________and trailer #________, from _________(You), at _________ address (Yours). Each unit is in _____________ (Excellent, good, poor)shape and is deemed "Road Ready", or "Inoperable" by _____________(driver X). All standard equipment appears to be available and in work ready condition.

Of course, this will get the recovery driver fired later down the line sooner if 1. he returns to the terminal and shows it to anyone in any office on site or later 2. Tom decides to sue or anything along those lines dealing with said truck...
However, I think it was an awesome suggestion & I would still do it if I were in this particular position
In the perfect world, none of these things would be an issue. Unfortunately, in trucking it seems that a lot of bad things happen to good people. In my opinion, these people at Roehl are power-tripping; the liability issue is minimal to them.
I've heard the larger carriers don't want you if you're willing to tell the truth too much  Apparently, they're afraid you'll be willing to tell the truth to DOT - someone who can separate them from their profit - all because they (DOT) had a short, seemingly unimportant conversation with you.
Tom, I wish I had something inspiring to offer you in the way of advice. I'm sorry this is happening to you. Isn't it hilarious, though, how people are so willing to get rid of someone, literally turn his/her life upside down, knowing that if it were them in those shoes the world would be so *unfair* all of a sudden? It trips me out. Sometimes when one door closes, we feel that the world is gonna end.. but I don't think this is a loss for you. I think it is a sign that you deserve better. I agree with whomever advised you to keep talking with Schneider, see a specialist about your injury, and take a gazillion pictures of that truck!! With tank being a specialty, I cannot see how you could go wrong. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Actually...Recovery drivers are usually Contractors. So the driver really won't have much concern about being fired for signing a receipt for the truck. IF the driver will not sign a receipt for the truck, Tom is not legally required to turn it over to him. I'm pretty sure tom signed a receipt for the truck when they assigned it to him.

Actually...seems that it isn't even a recovery driver coming to get it...

I called in yesterday afternoon, and my dispatcher wasn't in. I asked the guy who answered about it, and he said it was one of his drivers coming to get it. It's actually a trainer and a student coming down to pick it up...kinda strange!

But yes, I have every intention of photographing every square inch of the truck...don't need any problems from this!

Apparently, Schneider isn't hiring Bulk drivers from Columbus at the moment, they claim they have no openings. They do, however, have a dedicated run for Sears that would get me home every weekend...but the problem there is that I'd take a small pay cut... I put in an application, and they seem perfectly willing to hire me, but I told them I want to get this resolved with Roehl first, and that I may call them later.

Does anyone know of any other tank companies in the columbus area?

Thanks!

Kenan is there...and I think Dupre has opened a terminal there.

Don't matter what you have demonstrated. That letter the nurse so stupidly wrote trumps all as it came from a medical professional. In addition there have been people who have "issues" who do a job for a while, even though they may or are on some kind of restrictive duty, and then get "hurt" (maybe even legitimately) and end up costing the company they are working for major money. Also it has been known for some companies to ignore an employees restrictions or really push them and then wind up sued when the injury gets worse.

CYA is not something only drivers do. Companies are often real masters of it and employ it all of the time.

What I don't understand is why this nurse did not look through your medical records before writing a letter. If the surgeon or other treating physician had placed you on any kind of restrictions that are still valid it would have been in your records.

One thing you may want to be prepared for is that a letter from a standard physician may not be enough. A letter from the doctor who did the surgery would be best, one from a doctor with the same specialty would be 2nd best.

Is Roger still in charge of the training department?
While this so called recovery is a new driver picking up his new truck, Roehl does in fact have a team of drivers who do nothing but pick up abandonments.
As stated before, go over the truck completly with the new driver/trainer inch by inch,
Do not let them rush the inspection.
Make sure they and you have a signed receipt.
You know what you signed when you were assigned the truck.
Having to turn it over to a new driver, he/she will come up with all sorts of problems with it in the next few days (he'll be nervous as chit on the big road by himself!)
Backing problems are the number one problem, make sure all is right with the body and its attachments!
I'm guessing this will be his/her first solo run, which will take him/her through the house.
Having someone video tape at the same type is an excellant suggestion!
Hope it all works out for you.
.....and thanks for your service to our country!!!
