log book & bracketing ?

Question 23: When the driver's duty status changes, do §395.8(c) or 395.8(h)(5) require a description of on-duty not driving activities ("fueling," "pre-trip," "loading," "unloading,", etc.) in the remarks section in addition to the name of the nearest city, town or village followed by the State abbreviation?
Guidance: No. Many motor carriers require drivers to identify work performed during a change of duty status. Part 395 neither requires nor prohibits this practice. There is no requirement (other than a company one) to say what you are doing. Just where and when you are doing it. +1 for the Rev. -5 for the Rev not knowing what Bracketing IS!

The only thing that is required by the FMCSA to be in the remarks section is a city and state. If the period being notated is less than 15 minutes and is only being flagged, then the remark must also include the amount of time involved in addition to the city and state.

I've never bracketed, and I only flag city/state except for "PTI" at the beginning and end of the day, "fuel" for fuel, our customer (example: BAE Systems, Sealy TX today).
I've never had a logbook violation. Never had a ticket. Worst problem -ever- in fact was something like an inspection sticker or a marker light on a trailer. I think I'm doing pretty good considering I've hauled loads with 14 placards before . . . I have been criticized for my "legibility" though . . . Any driver that is driving a truck without "legal" logbooks is either stupid or inexperienced. There is no excuse for getting pulled over or pulling into a scale without a logbook that shows you are good-to-go. And I didn't drive 1,249 miles last Monday, by the way. If you'll just look at my logs, sir, you'll see I was completely legal . . . -p.

Instead of relying on what either of us, or ANYONE else on any board says, are you willing to spend the time to research the regs for yourself? IMHO, it is INCUMBENT on any and every driver to do just that! If you won't do your OWN homework, then you are at the mercy of those of us who WILL. Don't trust your Safety Director to understand them. They are just average people with average comprehension skills. Don't trust the LEO's, they are usually only H.S. graduates AT BEST! Don't trust your "instructors" I had one tell me that SPRINGS held back the trailer brakes! And NEVER trust another DRIVER! It all comes down to YOU! It is YOUR responsibility to know and understand the regulations that govern YOUR job and industry. There SHOULD be no "shortcuts!" The REV just thinks he is always right! I just like to argue! He thinks that "I" think I am psychic. "I" think that HE thinks he is infallible (like the Pope!) NEITHER is true! The TRUTH is, that "I" am always RIGHT.... and HE is mostly right except when he disagrees with ME! But, of course, HE will say the opposite! No.... I take that back! HE wouldn't even give me THAT much credit in reverse! Not even in FUN! Because.... he has no SOUL! He is the Devil incarnate! We should BURN him at the stake! ..... oh, nevermind.... he is trying to do that HIMSELF by trying to save a few bucks on his generator!   But, I think we BOTH agree that one should SLOW DOWN in a fog bank! :P [Just razin' ya, Matcat! "don't take it personal(ly)]

So SUE me!  Fact is.... I intend to revisit the thread(s) you refer to, and clarify my position. I'm SURE you will find it rewarding, as I intend to make certain concessions and ADMIT where I now believe I was wrong! But, if you don't mind, I'll do it in my own time! I don't WORK for your little 3 truck "enterprise." So my time doesn't belong to YOU! BTW..... did I hear you say something about a FUTURE driver? Did you lose one? In a "3 trick pony show" that amounts to about a 30% turnover rate. I wonder what is wrong with your company? Oh.... and I really appreciate your post about the UCRA regs in Oregon! As a mere 3 year driver, I was well aware of them! And they've been giving out those tickets for over a year now! Glad you FINALLY got the memo! Why don't you tell us all something ELSE we don't already know?
