I think it is all a crock of $#!+ doing nothing for security. $132.50 for a glorified ID card. There are no TWIC readers, no framework for standardization thereof, and no timetable for anything. My haz-mat endorsement meant I didn't have to have the threat assessment. Tell me again- why do I need this bull$#!+? "The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a vital security measure that will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system." Oh. I see. A plastic card in my wallet stops the terrorists. Did I call bull$#!+ already? -p.

+1 PhuzzyGnu.
BS is right. This is redundant in as far as HazMat CDL-A. They should waive the charge on HazMat endorsments, or give credit anyways.... we pay...that much is certain.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that if you already have the hazmat endorsement you can get a reduced rate on the TWIC. It wasn't too much, about $20.00 as I recall. There is absolutely no reason to even require the background check for the hazmat, much less anything else. If someone pays for the background on hazmat I don't know what another background is going to do except relieve us of another $135. I may not even keep my hazmat endorsement when I renew my license. I don't see a need to pay $94 in addition to what I pay for my license when they do a background check on me anyway.

And I thought it was a candy bar. Just goes to show, when people bother to explain to the uneducated what they are talking about then everyone can learn.

You are right, TSA conducts both the hazmat and twic background checks. So the HM background check should be enough, and they mention the discount as well, but where they get you for the full amount is when they look at your expiration date on your CDL. If your CDL expires in the next few years, then they explain that by paying the full amount your twic is good for the full 5 years. So you end up paying the full amount anyway. Unless you want to go back sooner of course. The only concern I would have about dropping the HM endorsement is that it may cause a driver to loose an opportunity on a decent paying load or job. Probably not in your case though. I don't know how many CDL holders nationwide are paying these fees, but it must be millions of drivers creating yet another cash cow for the government.
