I know I said I wanted to haul steel but I got to looking into dryvans and reefers as well and I'm weighing the pros and cons

Pros:

Dryvan-Variety of freight and back hauls

Reefer-Ability to haul dry and refridgerated freight, good money

Flatbed-Good exercise with securing and tarping

Cons:

Dryvan-Alot of carriers in this segment of trucking, worried about the rates, got to go to bad parts of town and weird loading hours

Reefer-Added expense of reefer fuel and the upkeep for the unit itself, got to put up with lumpers and grocery warehouses, got to go to the bad parts of town and weird loading hours

Flatbed-Securing and tarping loads in all the elements

I know that is just basic.......I'd like your opinions as well.

Thanks

As far as college is concerned I did some research and I think for my diesel mechanics I'm gonna go to Nashville Auto Diesel Collage (NADC) in Nashville, Tennessee.

I been doing some thinking. I'm not gonna get my own authority, just too much stress involved. I'm just gonna lease to a company and let them worry about loads and such. I'm not gonna take business in college cause I can do it at high school and I'm just gonna do my year of diesel mechanics in Nashville,TN and probably work in a shop for a couple years and then get on with an otr company when I turn 21 and then eventually own my own truck.

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's see as far as an update is concerned. I'm sticking with the business but instead of 2 years I'm gonna get my bachelors or maybe my masters I rather get the masters if I can. Then I'll do the diesel mechanics afterwards cause I hope Ranken will open up their diesel program again. As far as getting my CDL permit this summer I'm still gonna do that, but as far as what type of work I want to do ugh well I was thinking about farming BUT I'm worried about what they are gonna have me do during the slow season? I'm gonna keep my options open, I really don't want to jump at the first driving job that someone offers me. I want to make sure they got year round steady work, I'm sure farmers will have other work but who knows. What do you guys think?

Local lumber yard, steel supply house, etc. will hire you. Can also look at local furniture or appiance store.

Ever thought of working at UPS? Work in the warehouse for a year or so. Till your old enough, for a driving spot. That way you can stay in college, they actually help you (money wise) for college. Great benefits. It's a good way to go. They have a linehaul devision. Home everynight (I believe, and home every weekend by far). Not to bad. Just a thought keep an open mind as they say. Wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to go with though!
