I spent 4 years as an EMT Intermediate in a busy EMS system, although a doctor by no means, you should speak with a doctor. While you may be okay now to pass a DOT physical, your BP rises with age and will need to be addressed soon.

Here's a chart of what is considered healthy. The threshold for hypertension has been lowered in the last couple of years and what WAS good BP is no longer the case. Good luck and stay safe out there.

Normal
Systolic 119 mm Hg or below
Diastolic 79 mm Hg or below

Prehypertension
Systolic 120–139 mm Hg
Diastolic 80–89 mm Hg

High blood pressure (hypertension)
Systolic 140 mm Hg or above
Diastolic 90 mm Hg or above

Yeah and in 10 years those numbers will be thought to be in-correct....however no one not even doctors now what exactly constitutes good blood pressure on an individual basis , as good blood pressure is really just a theory as to what is healthy , but that in itself can very person 2 person ...And just because a person is at 119/79 doesn't mean they are not going to have a massive stroke ,and numbers over 139 don't mean a person is ever going to have cardio vascular problems .

I was told by a doctor a long time ago that the diastolic number is the one that alerts to a heart in distress ,and he gets concerned when the numbers start to get above 90 on the diastolic he also stated the first numbe can just mean you have strong heart ,and if the second number was low he did not get concerned over a relitively hiogh syastolic of 150 .

First things first. The reason they don't want you to use salt is that it forces the body to retain water. Most of that water is stored in your veins and arteries. The more fluid in your veins and arteries, the higher your blood pressure. So.....

The day before your physical stop drinking anything around 5pm and no salt. The next morning no smoking and go for a brisk walk. Working out will lower your blood pressure like lifting weights. You may feel like your head is going to pop off but your blood pressure will go down. Got a home blood pressure machine? Try it?

Ever see the ad's for Viagra? People with low blood pressure should not take it. Why, because it really lowers your blood pressure. Take one 2 hours before your physical. Worried about something happening down below during the physical? Don't. This stuff doesn't work unless the desire is there so unless your a homo with a male doctor, your all set.

If you don't believe the above it's a simple experiment you can try at home.

Did you know that mild dehydration can can cause a rise in blood pressure , as the body compensates for loss of liquid volums by adjusting vascular tension for the lack of liquid volume therefore if you are not carry excess fluid reducing fliud intake could cause rise in blood pressure

The real issue is, if he has legitimate hypertension, he needs to see a doctor. Not taking Viagra. Hypertension is not somehing to be fooled around with. There is no "magic" number to have a stroke with. Plus, the longer you have hypertension, the more damage you do to your kidneys. The damage is not reversible and if it gets bad enough you can end up on dialysis. You can also damage your heart.

Don't screw around if you have hypertension. Trust me. I worked in EMS and have seen otherwise healthy adults DIE from strokes. I once transported a 30 year old who up until the year before was playing football in the CFL and was in kidney failure because he ignored it.

Maybe he had predisposition to kidney problems . I had a friend back when i was 13yrs old that had kidney problems as a result he had high blood pressure his high BP was a result of his bad kidneys .

Without knowing the full background of that 30yr old foot ball player you are only guessing as to why he had kidney failure it could have been high BP due to pre existing un diagnosed an un-treated kidney problem , And kidney problems can cause a high BP . Not to mention certain substances athletes use are known to be potential danaging to the kidneys ,and is if a genetic predisposition to kidney failure exists then those substances can be very harmfull if used especially if not under supervision of a doctor ...And then you have our good frien Alchohol which is used by manyand is basicly a POISION and harmfull to every living cell in the body ,and if the 30 yr old had a genetic disdposition to kidney problem this substance would be murder on his kidneys .

Basically there are to many variables for that 30 yr old to llink his bad kidneys to a high BP after all it could have been an un-diagnosed kidney problem at the root of that high BP .

My point is don't just ignore it, it isn't going to just go away. And the doctor who told you 150 systolic is just a strong heart needs to go back to medical school. That's just plain lunacy.

As to the 30 y/o football player. He had hypertension and ignored it for several years and it caught up to him. He, like many before and after, decided to ignore it and was in denial. As a result his career as a football wide receiver was over. His health in shambles and facing dialysis and a transplant.

I am not a doctor and I don't play one on TV. But I was an EMT Intermediate and went to school for a year for a total of 380 hours in addition to 36 hours every year in cont medical education. I worked in one of the busiest EMS systems in the US and transported approx 3500 patients in four years. Please be careful with your health and don't discount it or you will pay the price later.

What was the cause of the 30 yr olds HYPERTENSION...you stated he had kidney failure could have just had hig BP from his bad kidneys .

Still you show me where there is definitive proof of what numbers are health for an exact individual as far as blood pressure B/C to my knoledge doctors don't know exact numbers and they have changed over the years as to what is considered ideal ,but to my knowledge are still not set in stone , as they are only theory no set in stone number that guarantress a problem in a certain individual infact I know guys who had what is considered ideal bP who have had all types of cardio vacular problems as well as kidney failure , but had ideal BP .

Definitive proof doesn't exist. That's why they call it practicing medicine.

His hypertension was because of certain risk factors. He had a family history and he was african american(who have the highest risk factor of all races).

Took BP at wallmart again. I not sure about the machine
174/95
166/88
then went and did my shopping, came back a few minutes later.
152/83

Isn't the little number the important one?

I had alot of coffee this morning and a big ass donut

Anyway I am 10 days away from starting school in Riverside
and have the Dr appt on the 10th.
My recruiter told me if my BP is high when he checks it to get a fast acting BP Pill

Got to have this under control before I leave for school because I don't want to go all the way down there and fail the test and be sent home.
They will charge me some bucks for that.
