My company uses it for communication only. Not confirmation, companies that don't trust their drivers do that.
I look at it as a usefull tool that can be annoying at times.

The company can also use it to keep check on the engine.Also ,if you pull a reefer,they can pull up on the qualcomm and keep track of the temp.in the trailer.Can tell if you disconnect from trailer also.The company I drive for uses it to send load info and a safety message once a week.Lot easier to communicate with dispatch over it.

The Qualcomm is used for communication but its also used to record everything that you are doing with the truck. I think your company is selling you a load of who-haa

It's a basically a QWERTY keyboard like you have, with one screen (the newer ones have a bigger screen) that beeps when you type. You can type anything you want to your dispatcher or you can use a pre made message and fill in the blanks... Like your empty call, loaded, directions, routing, fuel stops, etc

Hopefully he just had it out there as a joke. He'd be fired if he did that and something were to happen to it.
