Default New job...% pay question

Well guys I'll make this as simple as possible so here go's.

*I got a new job. I'll be hauling rough cut lumber on a curtainside flatbed.
*I'll start out making 25% of the load.
*I'll be a local. Home everynight. No sleeping in truck. No weekends. So no long trips.
*They say I will average $1000.00+ per week.

Does this sound realisticaly possible? I'm basically curious because I have no clue what a load of lumber pays and how to go about somewhat figuring it out.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Well with my scenario, I haul Kolumn Forms, and get 30% of the load. I'm also home every night, do hauls that can be completed in my 14hr day, and I hit just above $1,200 my first week with a 55 hour work week, Mon-Fri, and roughly 2000 miles... 8) So I'd say yes, it can be done!

Nice job unkut...I've been keeping an eye on your posts. Seems like you got a good job. 55 hour week and $1200 sounds pretty good. A 55 hour week where I'm working now would make me $812.00...Keep it up, be safe. Thanks for the reply.

PS: Do you get any benefits?
For the first 6 months I have to pay 50%. After that, they cover the whole family for free.
Also have some kind of pension plan, 2 weeks vacation after 1 year, and a 1% increase every 6 months as long as no accidents or tickets. So overall, it sounds like a damn good deal, the only thing im concerned about is not being able to make what they say I'll make, and working 400 hour days as Mackman was saying...

Yeah, full benefits after the 60 day probationary period. First 2 years its 50/50 then 60/40 then finals at 70/30. But we go with the family 80% paid plan with dental/vision/prescription coverage and its like $370 a month, which for me is $180 a month, or $45 a week..... which isn't bad at all these days! As for your free insurance.... NICE!!! I remember the last job I was gonna take came with the free coverage!!! But we get 1 week vacation after 1 year, 2 after 2, and 3 after 3.... then it max's out. No pension, and those SUCK by the way.... I was with Coke 5 1/2 years and lost everything!!! Cause if you don't retire there.... Bye Bye... But we have a 401K with company match here! Which I've always wanted. But the only advice I can give you is try it out. The only way to truly make a non-biased opinion in todays world is to taste it for yourself!!! Of course, I was scared too.... but did it.... and LOVE it... and I think you will too!!!

Remember something....25% of 0 is still 0.

When working by percentage, it is not good to be working for somebody who thinks 50% deadhead is profitable. And they are out there.

TRUE! But for the most part, percentage IS more beneficial!!! Remember this.... if your makin 0.... so is the company!!! So its in BOTH of your best interests to keep the wheels rollin... 8)

What I was trying to say is, that there are more than a few companies out there, that think that 50% deadhead is ok. A driver does not get paid for driving empty miles. Hauling a load that pay's say....$3750.00 to the truck on 1900 miles looks like awesome pay, percentage wise, with 25% to the driver. However..if the driver deadheads back 1900 miles...the driver made 0 for his or her drive time, or 24.5 cents per mile if you do the math on the percentage. For myself..I would rather work percentage for a company that holds the "loaded each way" mentality.

Oh, I gotcha now. Thing is, he said it was a "home daily" job. Therefore he would only be sent out on a roundtrip route that he could complete in his 14hrs per D.O.T.
